ICU812 Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Think I'll just maintain an ongoing log from now on instead of posting a new thread each time I go out. So I went out today for a little bit and caught a decent lmb. Spent another hour out trying a new place, and I think I found one I liked. Only tried a few points but on the second one I hooked into this 2.5 lber. Nothing compared to the hogs u guys pull but I'm having fun out there lol She took a crank bait off a grassy point. Real healthy northern strain imo Quote
endless Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 2.5 are still nice. WTG. So does that make a 1.5 and a 2.5 less than a week? Quote
ICU812 Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 haha yeah man! Hopefully soon I'll run into some 4's like you Thanks for checking out the thread! Quote
endless Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 haha yeah man! Hopefully soon I'll run into some 4's like you Thanks for checking out the thread! Always and don't worry it will come. I see your PB is between 5-6. Mine is the 4.9 so you got me beat. Quote
paul. Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 that is a nice healthy fish right there for sure. i'll take 'em like that any day of the week. twice on sundays. stay on 'em man. Quote
Big-O Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Another good one ICU812... WTG Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
ICU812 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 Went out for an hour today to a nearby lake that I didnt' think we'd do too well at. The lake is small and gets a lot of traffic etc. Couldnt get a jig bite or crankbait bite, couldn't get a swimbait bite. Moved around to different points and structure, not a bite. Finally slowed way down and jigged a small T-rigged senko in about 25 feet of water, slowly working it up the water column from the bottom, jigging it up and letting it drop. Finally got a few bites. Maybe 5 feet off the bottom? Little smallmouths. I guess that means the school was suspending? lol anyway I managed to land one - got a pic but its a dink lol so I dont think I'll be posting it unless I'm begged to show what a Maine dink smallie looks like haha. It was good to figure them out though - I found a school although it was a school of little guys. Don't think I'll be spending much time on this lake. Quote
MaineBassMan Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Good job. So does this mean that you have your boat all rigged up? The spawn is pretty much over so the smallies should be moving deeper. Quote
ICU812 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 Got the boat running and should have my fish finder installed today. It's my first time doing all this so I'm learning as I go, trying to go slow so I don't make too many mistakes lol. I don't have the trolling motor yet so I'm installing my tranducer in the stern. If all goes well today maybe I'll be able to go out tonight and see what this fish finding's all about lol. Yeah it was hard to find any bites and it was good to find a few deep - but I don't really like that lake and probably won't be going too much. It's just close and easy to drag the gf to lol. But I gotta get out on better waters here! Hope all is well man! Quote
ICU812 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 Thanks man! Best of the season so far! Not for long though Quote
ICU812 Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 Installed my fish finder today I wanted to take it out tonight and really can't believe I didn't, but I had some prior obligations and I guess it's good to let the sealant sit overnight. It took everything I had to drill holes in the transom Can't effin wait to get out and see if/how this thing works. Quote
ICU812 Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 finally got to take the humminbird out and see what's what. or try. lol. I still don't really know what's what but I'm learning each time I go out. Couldn't find any deep structure in the pond I was on and could only stay for about an hour and a half so after taking as long as I could racing around looking for underwater structure I ended up hitting a grassy point and sticking a 1.5 lb pickerel on an rtrap for my only catch. Think it's my first rtrap fish though which is cool. alright bout to pass out. Quote
MaineBassMan Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Thats cool, I fished a tournament on Three Mile Lake on the 26th of june. I was fishing an X-caliber type Rtrap and I think I lost My biggest bass ever and I was in a tournament when it happened ! It hurt so much. I even had a fishing club member next to me when I hooked it and he saw the whole thing and heard my BLANK BLANK spurts of poor english vocab. I did my best and I couldn't beat it got it right next to the boat and it dove for the bottom wrapped around a rock and broke my line ! I have never had a fish kick my butt like that fish did! I caught a lot of nice fish on that lure that day. Quote

I caught a lot of nice fish on that lure that day. Man that's the worst! I definitely know what it's like to lose fish - lost three smallies just the other day that might have been PBs. They just wanted to tease me that day I guess. That and I was trying to be cute and was using an ultralight rod with a broken tip lol so that didn't help my hookset ratio I'm sure. Good to hear from you man, hope all is well and you've been out there stickin pigs as usual Quote

ICU812 Posted July 9, 2011 Author Posted July 9, 2011 Thanks man! Went out with Beezy tonight to a place she wanted to try. I was being stubborn and almost said we should focus on a place we had already tried but I’m glad I went with the flow. We were there for a couple hours and the bite was pretty much on. Nothing crazy but lots of bites, Had 2 spit the hook on me and caught 3. My hookset's really been sucking. The first 2 were both about 1.5 and the last one was about a pound. Yellow trick worms were what they wanted. They were in the weeds by a dropoff. Caught my first dropshot fish on some ultralight which was fun. A nice small beautiful pond in Maine with wonderful company - can’t wait to try again. You can see on this second shot the dropshot hook really dug into the corner of the mouth like they say it will. endless Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Way to go again ICU! The first pic I think it was more than 1.5 It just looks long. WTG How many Beezy catch? How that depth finder working for you now? Quote
ICU812 Posted July 9, 2011 Author Posted July 9, 2011 Way to go again ICU! The first pic I think it was more than 1.5 It just looks long. WTG How many Beezy catch? How that depth finder working for you now? Yeah that one might have been 1.64 or something but there were no 2 lbers in the boat last night It was a good time at a new place though which is always nice. Beezy lost a few and I think only ended up sticking one, but it was a nice healthy bass. All the bass we caught there were really chunky. The depth finder is working pretty well, still figuring it out of course. I messed a little with the sensitivity and I think that may have helped, but either way just knowing the depth is a huge improvement! Still trying to find the best way to find and sit on structure - thinking some marker buoys might help. Trolling motor coming soon! Thanks for stopping by the thread! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 10, 2011 Author Posted July 10, 2011 Hit up a small local pond today for about an hour and a half – got ther right around 7 and stayed till dark which was right around 8:30. Was throwing a single tail grub on an ultralight drop shot rig. I've been into fishing for bass on ultralight lately lol. Ran into two smallies and a pickerel that I thought was a bass on the way in. This last smallie here hit my dropshot right by the boat as I was reaching for a beer and about to call it a night. Strange how strikes like that happen a lot. This one weighted 1.82. The one earlier was like .9 lol. The 1.82 may be my pb I forget lol but it was a nice smallie for sure. They were in 15ft of water on a drop off that goes from aobut 6 ft to 21. Close to a rocky area. A nudge over 15” We were the only ones on the pond which I especially liked. Quote
ICU812 Posted July 16, 2011 Author Posted July 16, 2011 Went out for an hour and a half last night to a relatively new spot. Ended up following the loons to a spot where the baitfish were boiling in 15 FOW. Hooked into this little chunky guy on a shakey-headed trick worm right around the boils. Went a little over 2 lbs. My first “Bird Fish” lol Tried an Rtap to imitate the baitfish but no love. Moved to a grass flat by an island and hooked a decent pickerel on my topwater swimbait. Pickerel suck lol and have no fight but the initial strike is fun to see. Moved to another grass flat with lots of stickups and fallen trees and hooked into a MONSTER bass that absolutley BOWED my MH St Croix and stayed low and buried in the grass all the way up to the boat. I made a huge mistake at that point and let the fish get under the boat and towards the stern where it wrapped the line around my anchor line and got off. I swear it was probably a new PB largemouth – it’s hard to tell because it never surfaced but I feel like it was probably 5 or 6 lbs. It sucks that I never got to see it but at least I know now that there are some lunkers in that body of water and I can’t wait to get back out and get me some! Quote
ICU812 Posted July 19, 2011 Author Posted July 19, 2011 lol thanks guys for commiserating with me on losing my probable PB lol no matter - onwards and upwards Got a chance to get out tonight for the usual 1 1/2 hour stint - wanted to try a different body of water so we went to a local lake that is supposed to have some decent smallies. It was a good chance for me to mess around with the depth finder and look for humps and dropoffs to fish because I figured the smallies are probably deep nowadays. Didn't do that great but caught a little guy that wasn't pic worthy on a dropshotted curly tail grub in 17 ft of water. It was MAYBE a lb. But I'm enjoying the challenge of catching fish out in the middle of the water as opposed to fishing weedlines and bank structure that I can see. I feel that I'm on the verge of figuring a few things out about fishing deep water. So really I had a great time out there Quote
BassCats Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Sounds like you don't need a depth finder that bad, you seem to find the fish regardless. We all lose the big one, maybe next time you will be able to update your photo with that fish. Quote
