New To Bass Fishing

Hello All,

I'm new to bass fishing having gone out several times last year at Occaquan Resevoir on a friend's boat.

I've lived in Germantown for the past 2 1/2 years and just discovered Little Seneca at Black Hills a couple of weeks ago. This inspired me to buy a setup and start wondering around. I've gone out about six times since then, but have only fished topwater and only fished over by the boat launch mainly on the water separated from the main portion of the lake.

I've gone over this thread, and any helpful pointers or pointing in the general direction of where to fish would be great. For example, where's the stick up? and the bridge everone is referring to? Is Gunners Lake worth fishing? I don't have a boat so I'm restrcited to shore. I really appreciate you help and look forward to meeting some of you out there!

Have you had any success at Black Hills. I haven't fished Gunners lake, but i'm sure it's a decent spot. From my experience, All the little lakes and ponds around Montgomery County have decent sized bass in them. If you are on foot, I would also suggest fishing the smaller bodies i.e. golf course ponds, drainage ponds and ponds in the woods etc.. If you look at google maps, you can switch between map view and satellite view to see the water bodies and what's around them physically. I caught a three pounder in the montgomery village golf course pond on watkins mill rd. With a bumble bee pattern popper (with a fly rod). There is also a pond on watkins mill rd where the seneca creek trail access is (big radio antenna's are there.) It's a little bit of a grassy bushwack to get in close to it, but I have had friends in the past nail some lunkers in there. If I lived over that way, i'd still be haunting all those little spots. Also Clopper lake is pretty good, there is a good access point off Longdraft rd in gaithersburg. If you want to hit some small mouth, just point your car towards dickerson and fish the potomac, monocacy (mouth of monocacy road) and warm water access (at Dickerson Conservation park, on google maps) near the power plant. I think the C and O canal has some largemouth bass in it, however, many parts are stagnant. Also the mouth of the seneca creek can be productive.

I also started bass fishing recently. I just picked up a boat last weekend and have been fishing the Liberty reservoir. I found a box of discount bomber lure's at the frederick walmart and have been fishing bomber 4a type lures, also a berkly frenzy (red tiger color) that I picked up at a KMart in California. Had consistent success with all. The 4a's would be good for fishing from shore because they are buoyant and only dive a couple feet and have produced all my larger fish within 10 feet of the shore. Also all these lures have some green in them. The berkly frenzy has to be reeled in at top speed and I've only caught small mouth on it.

I went to BHP today and did well. Lost several and landed four, the largest about 18 inches and probably four pounds or so. It my personal best!

Not to burst your bubble but most bass 18 " long weigh under 3 lbs. Buy your self a good scale and you'll find out what I'm talking about.

Nice work. Big fish are big fish. Since I started bass fishing last week, I havent caught anything over 15". I need a scale as well. I have a bag of senkos, they are a deep red, i'll have to give them a try. My wife and I hit the lake on Sunday, she killed for her first day out. She landed a 15" SMB a good sized spotted bass and a Large mouth, she lost my frenzy lure to a massive hit. I caught a coupe small mouths. It's great, she was PO'd about the boat purchase but now wants a good med weight rod, reel and lures! Lots of fun, I'll keep you posted.
