Bass Pro Crankin Rod, New

Me and my fishing partner and long time friend went out last night for a few hours of mainly cranking. I used to use an American Rodsmiths Titanium Cranking rod in 7'6 and had a good hook up ratio with stock DD22's, no hook upgrades.....

Last night I lost two fish that normally would not come unbuttoned in my experience so I'm thinking that rod is to blame...

It's the Bass Pro Crankin stick in 7'6MH, XF...... The difference is this rod has a lot less flex than I am used to so I'm thinking it pulled the bait away from the fish..... Am I far off here?

I like the rod a lot but apparently I don't know how to fish cranks with it. What can I do to prevent lost fish with this XF, MH cranking rod?

I'm getting ready to buy that Powell Max Deep cranking rod and be done with it...or the Powell Max Glass 753.....

May sell BPS rod...

I hate blaming gear, unless it breaks, but to me that seems like a rod better suited for traps in shallow grass and not x-deep divers.

x2 My favorite deep cranking blank is one used on the Lamiglas SR705 which is a Mod action.

2 years ago i videotaped myself fishing. now i set the hook with my whole upper body, not my arms.

I think a moderate action would be better suited for deep cranking, but if getting another rod is out of the question, just back of on your drag.

I don't like to blame gear either. I like the rod and it's definitely nice for the money but as you said, probably not the best rod for deep diving cranks. As far as traps in grass, well that ain't happening around here very often. Any opinion on Powell 753 Glass or Powell Max Deep? I think I'm leaning toward the Deep Composite....

That H3 Titanium American Rodsmiths was a great cranking rod, really nice. Now it's 214 retail...sweet! Ha. Not gonna happen for that price....I think that Powell will make it look silly

My arms are solid as a rock! Ha. Not true but I swear I never had to set the hook with other cranking rods..just put a bit of pressure with a short sweep and they're on......This rod won't allow it.

I use a Powell Max 703CB Glass rod for my deep crankin needs and it performs flawlessly. Give the Powell a try, you will fall in LOVE!!!

Also, when setting a treble hook bait do you swing the rod to your left or right?

If not, try that method as used by the pros.

Also keep all slack out of the line after hooking the bass. Any slack and the fish is history.

I use 3 different BPS Crankin' Sticks on my boat. I personally like it that the BPS 7'6" MH has a slightly faster action than many other rods in the category. I use this model with 12 lb Floro for throwing my deep diving cranks, often times there are submeged weeds that I rip the bait off of that triggers strikes. The faster action does a better job of ripping the bait off weeds and also helps achieve longer casting distance than slower fiberglass models. The good thing is there is still enough flex on this rod to keep the fished pinned and I get over 90% of them to the boat.

The second combo I use is the 7' M rod. I've used the older black color rod for several seasons and this year purchased the newer model in an effort to upgrade. I also use this with 12 lb Floro and use this for lipless cranks, shallow runners like the 1 minus & RC line and also smaller medium runners like a Storm Wiggle Wart. I used the newer model for a couple weeks and I was diapointed (though happy with the newer version 7'6" MH) because the rod doesn't cast as far nor rip the bait off of weeds as well as the older model so I went back to that one. As you can tell ripping the crank off of weeds is a large part of my cranking technique and it probably accounts for app 1/2 of my crankbait strikes over the season and I fish cranks more than any other lure.

The 3rd one is 7' MH spooled with 17 lb mono that I use for large 3.5 size squarebills, wake cranks or when I want to keep lipless cranks and other baits higher in the water column.

The last combo I use is a 6'9" Med custom made spinning rod that I have spooled with 6lb Yozuri Hybrid that I use for jerkbaits, floating Rapalas and lightweight cranks like Shad Raps and other small cranks that I throw on occasion.

I've been using BPS cranking rods for a few seasons and overall been very pleased with them.

Yeah, I think I will. I don't remember reading one negative comment about these rods anywhere. I'm still torn between the all glass and composite but I think I'll try the composite 7'11 and see how I feel about it. I think I'll be pleased.

I do like the rod. I think it feels and looks great. I suppose I'm just not used to that action. I do swing the rod to one side or the other when setting the hook. You're right about slack on those treble hooks....as soon as it lets up they vanish in a hurry!

In all fairness to the rod, one of the fish that came off was way on the end of a long cast and it jumped immediately after hitting the crank....I felt pressure but had no time to get the hook set and put pressure on the fish...

Good info, I appreciate it. I had one of those older crankin sticks and I liked it quite a bit. I got it cheap. I'm not sure why I sold it! I still see them on Ebay from time to time. I have a 7' XPS Extreme rod (the black model) in MH but that thing has a great action to it...very flexible. I use it for medium cranks and spinnerbaits...awesome rod. I just wish I could find one in like new condition to replace mine with. Otherwise I'm going to end up talking myself into an expensive spinnerbait rod.....

The SR765 is 7'6" Retail is $260. Mine is custom built on the same blank. It's paired with an ABU 4600 C3. It casts well, sensitive enough to feel the wobble of the bait, has plenty of backbone to haul fish out of cover and is forgiving enough to keep them hooked up.

Sounds like a perfect blend to me. It's more than I'm willing to spend but it sounds great. I think I'll try one of the Powell's and see what happens. Might try the new Endurance 804 composite. I hear it's very flexible and has power as well......Also considering a Phenix Glass Rod, G790.....Decisions!
