Super User Hooligan Posted June 19, 2011 Super User Posted June 19, 2011 Quick question: I've been having an issue with a brand new Curado 201E7. The palm side bearing is growling, even after cleaning, degreasing, and a single dab of Rocket Fuel. They're stock, which leads me to believe I just got a boned bearing to begin with. However, I don't have time to send it off and have them ALL replaced. Would it be worth it to replace the palm side and cast control bearings with a pair of ceramic hybrids, or would it be totally worthless in terms of real value? I'm not concerned about super-tuning the reel, but eliminating as much of the noise as is possible, if I gain a touch easier pitching, excellent. Thoughts? Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 I just got the bearings replaced in my 50E (out of curiosty, nothing was wrong with the Shimano stock bearings). I got some high-end ceramic bearings and actually made the reel worse for me. It tightened up the reel way too much! I trust the guy I take my reels to, but for me it was a giant waste of $$. One thing I was told by the Bearing maker is ceramic bearings will make more noise so, heads up on that one. Personally, I recommend saving your $$. Hope this helps, Wdy Quote
Fat-G Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I have a set of ABEC 7's in my Citica. Makes a world of difference. If you run them dry, they will be noisy but cast a LONG ways. Woody, I'm guessing Wayne put grease on them. Next time you see him tell him to run them dry. Quote
BobP Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 The ceramic bearing I tried in my Curado were actually noisier and vibrated more than the stock bearings until they were "run in" for a few months - but they were a little faster. Were it me, I'd throw in a pair of ABEC7's. Maybe that will fix it. But since it's a new reel, I'd seriously consider sending it back to Shimano for warranty repair. That way, it gets fixed if you're wrong about the bearing. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hayden, not sure if Wayne did or not couldnt see that well. I was sitting over in the other chair and he was working under his light. The ones I had put in were/are Boca Bearings, there top of the line ones. I spoke with Larry there before putting them in and he said you can either put grease on them or not. But, that grease will act as a noise dampener since the bearings are enclosed. Quote

IMPO I would call Shimano direct and ask for a replacement set for the reel, make sure you replace all of the bearings for spool shaft support.Tight Lines!! Quote

Call Shimano, explain the issue, and see if you can get replacements. Saving that, I have had great results with Smooth Drags Abec 7 Ceramic Hybrids. I've been using them in two Sols and a Zillion for a couple months now. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 As suggested, stock bearings should be fine if you can get them free. If you have to buy replacement bearings ABEC7 ceramics hybrids are an upgrade. Quote

Super User Hooligan Posted June 21, 2011 Author Super User Posted June 21, 2011 Don't tell them you put Hot Sauce on them! I don't use Hot Sauce, it's terrible. I use Daiwa Oil, or Rocket Fuel. From my conversations with a Shimano Rep (Not Bantam1) Rocket Fuel is absolutely fine to use on them. Quote
