DINK WHISPERER Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 You get what you pay for, most of the time. I believe in the case with Matt's swimbaits you do get what you pay for. I have not been able to get my hands on some of Matts swimbaits as of yet, but I have yet to hear/read a bad report from someone who does own his swimbaits. And all I see is pictures of very nice fish with Matt's swimbait deep in the fishes mouth. Matt, great lures and keep them coming. Mrlitetackle, cant wait to see the fish you catch with them, Im sure you will be very happy with the results. This is VERY true! They are worth more than what they are sold for IMO! It's crazy how they caught on in my area! A few people got some on Ebay and than everybody had to have them! Quote
Big-Dan Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 got a quick question sorry to go off topic though, i have tons of sunfish here on my local river and was wondering if my smallmouths actually eat them or go after say the perch or other species. is a blue gill the same as a sunfish? if so then ill have to get me on of these bad boys. Quote
Mattlures Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Bluegill, Crappie, and freashwater bass are all sunfish. However there are certain sunfish like red ear or green sunfish that actualy have the word sunfish inj thier names. Smallmouth will absolutley eat any small fish they can fit in their mouths including bluegill and sunfish. However they would probably preferr smaller gills then a largemouth would eat. I guess it just depends on the size of your smallies. If they are big then they shouldnt have a problem eating a mid sized swimbait. Now the little 2-3lbers might have a problem getting hooked. I havent fish for smallies so I dont have personal experiance with them Quote
Big-Dan Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 cool thanks for the info Matt, well they are roughly 2-3lbs so yea unless you make some mini versions then i think the ones you got might be a little big > Quote

J-B Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 I got my male bluegill Hardgill today. I almost called in sick at work to go give it a try but unfortunately I have to work to make up for ordering the bait. The bait looks great. I am planning on testing it in a 60yr old, not so well known rock quarry in my area. I have seen some very, very big bass swimming around in the crystal clear water and I have been wanting to fish it. I wanted something that looked very realistic to use in that clear water and this bait is it. I will be happy to give a report about it once I have tried it out. BTW, thanks for the great work and promt shipping Mattlures. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted June 17, 2009 Super User Posted June 17, 2009 I have a floater version of the Hardgill and have caught a 1lber, a couple of 3lbers and one approaching 5lbs. I don't throw it as much as a should, but I can attest to the fact that it does have an incredible life like action. So, those of you who are wary of throwing it because its too big don't worry bass are more than aggressive enough to have a go at one! I can't wait to try it on some SNOOK! Quote
J-B Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Mattlures told me that one of his tricks for this lure is to cast it out and let it sit for up to 20 minutes and then start your retrieve. The waves, or the current will make the fish swim a little to appear like it is a fish just sunning itself. I guess this gets the big ones interested in the bait and when it starts to move away, they go after it. He said that if it is jerked it will do a kind of walk the dog action. If anyone should know how to use this lure, I feel that he does. I plan on giving this method a try. Quote

While I don't have the patience to let a bait sit for 20 minutes, when I do use this technique I normally do anywhere from 3-5 minutes. The big girls tend to be real picky on what they want to eat. If you give them time to analyze the situation, it can sometimes stack the odds in your favor. All of my hardgill fish have been from this technique. I'll find shady pockets and throw on the sunny side of the line. I'll let it sit and sometimes if you let it sit long enough you can see them come out and stare down the bait. Anyway, with a bait this detailed, you have a real advantage when using this technique!!! Quote

Mottfia Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 In fisherman did a study on how big of baitfish a bass will eat and it is amazing what it said. And if I remember right, a bass can eat a baitfish up to 70% of its length. Matt's lure easily fall into that category for the fish that people are looking for with it plus a few bonus smaller fish.
