joshholmes Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 my brother has taken an interest in fishing so i bought a decent set up. i cant decide what line to use for him. its between powerpro and trilene xl. trilene is much cheaper so if he hates fishing i wont lose to much money, but if he does like his spirit might be killed by a lost fish or a huge birdnest. on the otherhand braid handles better, makes up for bad hooksets, doesn't birdnest and sure wont break on anything he catches, but if he hates it ill lose a lot of money. im thinking ill go with braid but i want an outside oppinion. also how chould i start him off. theres tons of big rock bass around my dock but a bass will be more fun to catch so which fish should i start him on Quote

Huntnfish Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Rig him up with some 6 or 8 pound trilene and loosen the drag a tad if your worried about breaking the line. For rock bass and bluegills theres no reason to get braid. Hopefully he likes it! Quote

He's going to get some tangles that probably aren't going to come out and you'll have to cut them out. Mono makes it not such a big deal. Plus he'll be less likely to rip the hooks out of a fishes mouth with the stretch in mono than he would with braid. Quote
Lake Forest Bassin Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I'd go mono also, I have a 9 year old niece that wanted to go fishing with me I got her a pink lady Shakespeare rod and reel with some 8 pound mono and she catches alot of bluegill, bass, she even hooked a snook the other day. Quote
