my brother has taken an interest in fishing so i bought a decent set up. i cant decide what line to use for him. its between powerpro and trilene xl. trilene is much cheaper so if he hates fishing i wont lose to much money, but if he does like his spirit might be killed by a lost fish or a huge birdnest. on the otherhand braid handles better, makes up for bad hooksets, doesn't birdnest and sure wont break on anything he catches, but if he hates it ill lose a lot of money. im thinking ill go with braid but i want an outside oppinion. also how chould i start him off. theres tons of big rock bass around my dock but a bass will be more fun to catch so which fish should i start him on

how old is your brother? i got into fishing when i was young by catching bluegill. but if your brother is old enough put on a lure for him that's easier to work like a crankbait or a senko.

i would say just put him on a little roostertail, it will catch him some panfish and some small bass too. if he wants to try and use lures try and teach him.

i was thinking about that but i mainly need to decide on the line. i was using artificials and catching 1-4 lb bass when i was five or six but then i had already fished for about 4-5 years

I think most of us probably learned with mono. It works.

Rig him up with some 6 or 8 pound trilene and loosen the drag a tad if your worried about breaking the line. For rock bass and bluegills theres no reason to get braid. Hopefully he likes it!

Braid is too expensive and unforgiving to teach a kid to fish with IMHO. He's going to get some tangles that probably aren't going to come out and you'll have to cut them out. Mono makes it not such a big deal. Plus he'll be less likely to rip the hooks out of a fishes mouth with the stretch in mono than he would with braid.

I'd go mono also, I have a 9 year old niece that wanted to go fishing with me I got her a pink lady Shakespeare rod and reel with some 8 pound mono and she catches alot of bluegill, bass, she even hooked a snook the other day.

I too started with mono. I got lots of tangles and lots of snags, thank God it was less expensive.

i think mono will be just fine to get someone started, as mentioned above, just leave the drag a little loser than normal. you may love braid, but mono isnt really that bad as some make it out to be...
