moby bass Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I've been looking for a new rod for chucking heavier spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, etc, usually between 1/2 to 1 ounce. I ran across these Skeet Reese rods at Gander Mtn. They have a heavy/fast action, 7'6" rod for line up to 30# and baits up to 1 1/2 oz. It also has the micro guides, which I'm not sure about. Seemed very nicely balanced and light weight, but the guides bother me. Anybody own any Skeet Reese rods in general and micro guides in particular? What do you think of them. Also, what reel would you pair with it that would have some decent line capacity and drag power? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I'm not sure which brand and model guides they're using, but in general, micro guides are now my default starting point on bass rods. "Micro" covers a range of guide sizes usually <size5. Potential concerns would be icing in extreme cold and passing of leader knots. An Albright knot joining 65# braid and 17# mono should pass through a size 4 guide with no problem. What's your budget for a reel? Quote
moby bass Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 These guides are quite small. Not sure if even 30# mono would go through them. Braid would not be an issue obviously. I won't be fishing when ice would be a problem. Do they offer better casting, less line "wobble" going though the guides. Smaller guides = less weight, even though there are more of them. For a reel, $100 or less. http://www.wright-mcgill.com/skeet-reese-2/sf-micro-honeycomb-rods The heavy cover rod is the one I'm looking at. Quote
DnaDProBassShops Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I bought a cranking skeet reese rod early spring with the intent of returning it, until I could find something else I liked, but ive kept it ever since. Its a pretty decent rod for 90 bucks. The only thing I would kind of complain about is the lack of sensitivity, it seems to not really pick up any movement of my crankbaits in the water and/or when I smack it against stumps or rocks. Other than that its a decent rod. Quote
LP-Fishman Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I love my heavy cover model. It's extremely sensitive and my main uses for it are deep Texas rigs and flippin. It casts very far with ease but im not sure about using it for spinners. I used it for a 6 inch paddletail the other day and it handled nice for the hooksets. Quote
RoryO Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Outdoor Pro Shop has a good sale going on with these rods and reels right now.. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS431US431&q=outdoor+pro+shop Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 17, 2011 Super User Posted June 17, 2011 There are much better rods out there. Look at the Falcon Bucoo. They're lightyears ahead of Skeet Reese's product if you ask me. Also check out the Shimano Compres, and the St.Croix Premier. All are relatively in your price range and should be available at your local gander mountain. Quote

A lot of people like to knock these rods for some reason but I had the Spinnerbait/Worm rod and I thought it was great. I love the amount of tip it had. I only sold it because I was out of work and outta cash. The best deal I've seen on these rods is on Amazon by far. Reds Gear is the seller and he seems to have prices far below anyone else. I'm not certain about the Micro guide models but I hear nothing but good things about these guides in general. Quote
ChazfromVA Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 heres my experince with a skeet reese spinerbait rod. 1st cast with a unweighted fluke and a 5/0 hook .. SNAP! the rod broke right i half .. so needless to say im not a fan Quote
Senkoman12 Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 the honeycombs are ok. the tessaras suck big time. i would get a lamiglas excel. they have them in the same actions and lengths as the skeet reese but they are miles ahead of the skeet reese. much better quality and more sensative Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted June 17, 2011 Super User Posted June 17, 2011 i like the rods. but know the rods are nothing more than the "status quo". Quote
