Good Shock Absorption?

I've been using Fluoro this year with mixed results. What I have found is that it works really well on my crankbait set ups, where the hook set is more deliberate and more of a addition of pressure. On the other hand it seems like 6/10 I break off when I'm flipping jigs or soft plastics. Maybe I'm setting the hook too hard? It seems like that could be the case. If there is indeed very little stretch in Fluoro as advertised I could see that as an explanation for snapping line on the violent hook sets I seem to employ. From what I've read on here, it may just be that I'm using the wrong kinda of Fluoro. I've been using Vanish from Berkley and to be honest, it has it's days where it's awesome! Then again it has more days where I'm like I don't understand! I think I read somewhere that it was initially designed for Walleye fisherman and open water presentations. Which would explain my break offs in the thick cover. What is the best bang for your buck Fluoro line? I get ripped for not wanting to spend a bunch of money, but I don't think you have to spend $30 on 100yd spool to have good line.

Also, what are the best knots to tie when using Fluoro? I've been using an improved clinch knot with a double wrap around eye. I since the knot while it's in my mouth to make sure it's super wet when tightened, but I've read it's not the knot to tie. What do you recommend?

How are you double looping an improved clinch? That's what I use and I haven't had any issues.(minus the double loop)

I'm no expert with fluoro, but most fluoros have stretch comparable to mono lines. Fluoro is more sensitive due to its greater density.

Are you reeling up all the slack before setting that hook? Taking care of that fixed my trouble with inexplicable break-offs.

How are you double looping an improved clinch? That's what I use and I haven't had any issues.(minus the double loop)

I use Berkley 100% FC

By double looping I mean I insert the line through the eye then back around again and then tie the knot. This gives me a double loop on the bottom of the knot.

Yes I'm reeling up all the slack before setting the hook. It just seems to pop either on the hook set, to a point where I feel absolutely nothing or I feel the fish move and it's almost like I feel the line pop under the pressure. Went fishing with a buddy the other day and he was like DANG you really swung on that fish. Broke the line as the fishes head broke the surface. And also flew a couple of smaller fish out of the water later in the day.

Many people have had problems with Vanish. They say that it makes your lures "Vanish." I'd give Trilene 100% or Seaguar Invizx a try.

I've used an improved clinch knot for over a year now with 12lb XPS fluorocarbon and have had 0 break offs. I just make sure the knot cinches down perfectly and has plenty of spit so it doesn't rub against itself.

ive been trying the stren fluorocast lately in 17lb, first time trying fluoro too, i havent had any breakage issues with it. its definately not invisible under water to fish like i thought fluoro was supposed to be, i have had bluegills nipping at the line while im fishing. seems like i get more backlashes with it than the 14lb trilene xl i was using, but im new to baitcasters this year as well...

Different formulas for different purposes. An improved clinch knot with two wraps around the hook eye is a Trilene knot.

When cinching down your knot, do it slowly. I mean s-l-o-w-l-y.

Try a SD jam knot. That works best for me.

I thought I'd heard somewhere that Fluoro had about as much stretch as mono, I guess it's all marketing. Maybe I should just look at the invisibraid? Has anyone tried that?

Nothing wrong with vanish. I use palomar knot and 10 # vanish almost broke my hand 2 weeks ago and got the fish. 0nly 20 ft line out with mh spinning rod 6-6 no probs

Stren Original Clear Blue Fluorescent. $6.96 at wally world, 330 YDS. IMO summer fishing when you are using alot of top water, mono is better. I tried the Flouro like you I broke off jigs and other baits. Went back to Mono no problems.

i like p-line. i just spooled up with cajun red cast, no complaints yet.

It seems you are one of the very few that feels this way. I was like you, at first I loved the Vanish. One break off during a hook set is a fluke, 2 is a pattern, and 3 is a trend. Happened more than just 3 times, now using Stren Fluorocast and keeping my fingers crossed. Have had no issues as of yet. Will switch to P-Line next, I've heard almost no complaints about their products.
