Ramz Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I fish this small lake that has some nice 5 and 6 pounders in it. The problem is, as soon as the temp hits the 90's like it is now the topwater vegetation is THICK except for some small patches and a little area of the lake. This is the first year I am going to be fishing it using a boat. I plan on throwing a few different Scum Frogs, but that is really all I have as far as frogs go. What are some effective lures I can use. They are most likely going to be floating topwater because it seems anything else would be craziness because of the amount of weeds in the water. Also I have been wondering if I should use a different type of line. As of now I have 15 lb test Stren mono on a Mitchell 300x spinning reel. THANKS FOR ANY REPLIES Quote

tholmes Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Don't overlook the old-timer, the Johnson Silver Minnow spoon. Hang a 3-4" grub as a trailer, and hold on! Tom Quote

Super User Marty Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 If you're fishing the surface of thick weed mats, I don't think the lure is that critical because they can't see it, but they detect the movement. If you're using something other than a soft plastic, have another rod ready and rigged with a soft plastic. If a fish crashes through the mat and misses your lure, get that soft plastic into the newly created hole in the mat ASAP. This type of follow-up often gets picked up by the fish. Quote

tnbassfisher Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I like pitching creature baits right into the weeds. Quote
bman310 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I also agree with Marty. I fish a lake with heavy weeds & grass and caught back to back lmb on a 5" Senko right after another angler was working his lure. I threw the senko in an opening and caught a 4 lb bass after it hit the bottom. The very next cast I caught one as the Senko was dropping after the initial cast. This is at a high pressure city lake too! I've also caught lots of bass when I let the senko hang up in the weed edges (various depths in the water colum) and let it sit there, then I move the rod tip a few inches and wait for the line movement. Good luck! Quote
Bass Dude Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I like throwing big tubes either weightless or with 1/16 weight and dragging it over the top of the grass. Also a big grub or big worm weighless, drag it over the weeds and drop into holes. Quote

Right on, if the pads are thick enough you can throw just about any t-rig and fish it as a topwater. Quote
ukbumpkin Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Grass jigs and punch rigs on heavy tackle and braid. What are your favourite jigs for this? I've been stepping up my jig fishing tackle collection, as it is a type of fishing I really enjoy, but haven't decided on a favourite jig brand yet. Quote

Good luck! One of the lakes I fish at is heavily weeded as well and the weed line is visible from the shore. I had never caught fish in this area fishing from the dock. One day while fishing there I watched a guy bring in 4-5 fish in the 2-3lb range with one fish being 4lbs. Next day he did the same thing and again the following day. I approached him and found out he was using a 5" Senko and doing just as you described and on some days he would be the only person I would see catching fish. This technigue does require some patience though to wait for line movement but it works. Quote
ChiCityBasser Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Which lake in NW indiana? As I fish in that area as well and fish one of the Issac Walton lakes in Homewood, IL. Quote

Its funny that you should mention Issac Walton because the lake I am referring to is an isaac walton lake. I am a member of the Griffith chapter. Quote

Super User CWB Posted June 15, 2011 Super User Posted June 15, 2011 If the weeds aren't too matted over, you can't beat a Rage Shad on a 5/0 Owner twistlock hook and 50 lb. braid. Caught several nice ones this past weekend on this set up. My follow up bait is always a 5" wacky rigged senko. Never misses. 1 Quote
