I fish in a I believe a darker color water. The pond water look black looking.Anyways I just bought me some Brush Hogs and I would like to to khow to fish it,best line, best color and hook to use.I read in the earlier thread to use a straight shank hook. What is the best one to use.Owner, Trokar Gammy etc.I also want to know the best color.I got the Green Pumpkin and Red Bug color to start out with.I would also like to know what is the best line to use for these things.I have now on my bait caster abu garcia 09 model 12lb berkley 100 fluorocarbon on my 7 ft Quantum Tour Edition Rod MH rated for Carolina Rig and Slow rolling spinnerbaits. and on My Revo Premier 2011 version I have 15 lbs Berkley Big Game.On my spinning Stradic 3000 Seaguar Invixz 8lbs line and on my Sedona for now Berkley 8lbs Transoptic which sucks and I am going to remove the waste of money soon. Any help in this new bait to me would be great.I am expanding my baits which consisted of soft bait cigar shaped stickbaits and crankbaits.I half tried walking the dog , Spinnerbait and pop r fishing lately.I did the mistake today in using my 8lbs line in the lily pads slowly on top of the pads using a junebug trickworm needless to say since I am fishing from shore and dont want to drown or bit by the snake I saw earlier in the day I broke the line.I really need a darn boat or snake boots but I am unemployed as I said before in my other threads and cant afford either. If I could get a boat I would fish 12 hours a day if I can.I would fish 24 7 if I could but naturally I cant unfortunately.I love fishing its in my blood. If I could do tournaments u would say kvd who.I dont have many things that I am passionate about and fishing is one of em.Anyways if anyone can help me which I am sure many of u fish these thing that would be great.

I love me some Brush Hogs.

I like the Watermelon color for clear water and the Black Ruby or Blueberry color for darker water.

My most productive way of rigging them is texas rigged with a keel weighted worm hook. Texas weedless with a 3/0 (baby) or 4/0 (regular) works fine as well. I've used EWG and straight shank and it hasn't made much difference in hookup % or anything. I prefer Owner hooks but you can't go wrong with Gamakatsu either. They also make a great bait for flipping/pitching and fishing through heavy cover.

When using the keel weighted hook I throw mine on my BC setup (10-12LB line) but when I go weightless like tossing it on the spinning setup. Nice slow retrieves get me like 75% of my bites with this bait. Be ready though, when keel weighted the bass loved to hit them on the initial fall.

10 lb stren flouro on my BC. T-rigged with a 3/8 bullet weight. Green pumpkin is my favorite. Handles every water color really. I hop it or drag it on the bottom. Caught a 3lb today on one.

Good luck.

I T-rig them on 12 to 15 lb. flou. carbon line on a BC. But you should have more than one color. I like candy bug, junebug, green pumpkin red. They are a killer at night also.I fish them on a Owner 3/0 or 4/0 EWG hook.

Just about all the questions you're asking depend on the depth and cover you're trying to fish.

Well there is grass and there is a few Lilly pad patches. Its a neighborhood pond.I dont know what kind of grass it is.Some of The grass or algae looks like milfoil while there are some that are floating around dark green or brownish color just floating clumps here and there.I dont know much about water vegetation. There are water grass all around the pond.Like snakes and stuff could be under it.If u have a site that has all of the types of vegetation that would be great.I need to know about that stuff. Some of the grass has little black seed like things amongst it.Maybe Sago Pondweed.I fish from the bank so I dont know what depth I am fishing.Should I tear the arm off of the body or whatever so that they can flap or whatever or leave em alone.I just got some 5/0 ewg trokar hooks so hopefully that will help.

Does the vegetation type really matter? The point of my post was just to think about where you're fishing, what you're trying to do and adjust accordingly.

If you're fishing around weeds, chances are you want to be as weedless as possible. And you want to choose a line that would give you a good chance to get a fish out of that cover when they hit. Are you trying to punch through the grass or fish on top of it? Pick your weight accordingly.

I must of missunderstood what u was saying and yes I think the grass does matter

If I'm on lily pads I drop them right on the edge of the pads or in pockets, weightless, usually a baby on a Gamakatsu 3/0 in Green Pumpkin, Watermelon and Junebug at night. But if it's slow I change it to a normal sized Brush Hog and 5/0 at night and really dark water especially. This has been the biggest producer for me this season so far. This set up is on a spinning reel with 8lb InvizX. For the really thick stuff I throw a tungsten on there, weight depends on the weeds, and this setup is on 20lb powerpro line.

Enjoy!
