Super User Bassn Blvd Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Wellfare recepients will now have to be drug tested before receiving assistance. It's about fricking time! 1
agstevens Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 now they just need to make this nationwide time to stop the abuse of these systems. 2
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Heard about it on the news this morning. Thats just awesome. About time.
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Why do I smell a lawsuit challenging this "law" by the ACLU? Though I'm wholeheartedly, maybe coldheartedly, in total agreement with the intent of this law, I doubt it will stand.
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 The ACLU is already reportedly planning a suit. From what I've read/heard. "But the law might not last that long. The Florida ACLU has already filed a lawsuit saying the law violates the fourth amendment rights of the welfare recipients’. “It’s not even random drug testing,” one of the officials says. “It’s drug testing of all people who apply for public assistance and you can’t do that without suspicion of something.” Florida will be the only state that requires welfare recipients to be drug tested." I'd like to see it stand, but for some reason I doubt it will.
Super User grimlin Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 now they just need to make this nationwide time to stop the abuse of these systems. I fully agree with that statement.
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Welfare system = the plague of our society. Enough said. 2
Super User J Francho Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Florida can tell the federal government who can receive welfare?
GrundleLove Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Even weed? That sucks. Also, there is no way in hell this will stand. Lawsuits like other said, will be tied up in the courts then eventually dismissed. Plus it's not like you can prove these drug addicts are using welfare for drugs. trufax 1
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 I'm not in favor of drug testing for welfare recepients. It targets people that may be as law biding as anyone else, just because a citizen may look like a marginal character does not mean that they are one. Sure there are some abusers and I agree it's not right.

Sure there are some abusers and I agree it's not right. They aren't targeting only marginal characters they are saying everyone wanting welfare assistance will have to take a drug test. If you have money to buy illegal drugs or prescription drugs that aren't prescribed to you then you shouldn't be receiving help anyway. Use your drug money to pay the bills and if you still need assistance after you are clean than by all means go get it. I also see people getting clean for a month or two just to start using again after they are approved for assistance. 1
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I heard MO is working on this too. I hope it happens and catches on and fast.
GrundleLove Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Wont they cut their losses with the whole...spending money on running these tests? Centers need to be set up, personnel to run it, lab fees....seems like more wasted spending to me
Super User Root beer Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Does the 4th Amendment still applies in Florida? That's all I'm saying. Also, ditto on what J. Francho said. Unless Florida got a state run welfare that I don't know about.
Super User Lund Explorer Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Who knows. There are people in society that need the social safety net of welfare, and I'm sure that many of them would gladly submit to these screenings, regardless if the law is constitutionally sound or not. That isn't the problem. Society has come to group all welfare recipients into the same classification as being lazy drug addicts who live off the system for no other reason than that they can. The passing of such a law does nothing but puts the government seal of approval on such thoughts. The thing is, I'll bet there are just as many alcoholics who won't get caught up in this novel legislation. There could also be people who have disabilities that require medications that could take away there benefits. The only fair way to administer welfare is to see that the people who do need it are helped, while reducing the number of people who simply play the system. You can't lump the lazy in with those people who have been saddled with physical or mental disabilites that very well couldlast the rest of their lives. I personally know of one Iraq war vet that is drawing both veteran's diability and a limited amount of state welfare for his family, while his wife tries to go to school and maintain their home. I can't imagine that anyone would walk up to a man who can't walk himself and tell him that he and his family is lazy. This law is at the best a weak attempt to correct abuse of the system, and at worst, is only motivated by a subject that we are not supposed to discuss within the pages of this forum. I'm off my soapbox now. 1
JoePhish Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Florida can tell the federal government who can receive welfare? There's both Federal and State welfare programs. Each decides it's own requirements.
JoePhish Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Next can we test public officials, both elected and appointed? A lot of people paying the taxes that go towards welfare funds have to take drug tests to earn that money. Yet the people receiving those funds are somehow above a test? That, my friends, is the nexus of the crisis.
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 8, 2011 Super User Posted June 8, 2011 First of all......WELL SAID LUND ! Whomever said that one of the problems is system abuse is right, here is the abuse as I hear it. Florida Governor Rick Scott's wife owns the majority of the company that is doing the testing($62million in ownership). Rick Scott moved his shares in Solantic into the Frances Anne Scott Revocable Trust, prior to moving the shares into his wife's name he was involved in running the business. Welfare recipiants must pay up front for the testing, money that they probably don't have. Columbia/HCA (Rick Scott)was involved in one of the countries largest medicare fraud cases, Columbia settled. This law has absolutely nothing to do with the poor abusing the system, it has everything to do with lining the pockets of the already wealthy. 2
Super User J Francho Posted June 8, 2011 Super User Posted June 8, 2011 There's both Federal and State welfare programs. Each decides it's own requirements. No, see below: Under the law, which takes effect on July 1, the Florida Department of Children and Family Services will be required to conduct the drug tests on adults applying to the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. TANF is a federal program started by Clinton in 1996. http://articles.cnn....?_s=PM:POLITICS Decide for yourself what is really going on here.....
GLADES Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Some folks are just hooked on drugs and continue to collect welfare while working off the books. The system is full of abuse and fraud. I have mixed feeling about the law because the ones that are always hurt the most are the kids of the drug users. The kids will have less than they have now. The druggie parents will still get their drugs.
GrundleLove Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Maybe they should drug test people who ride public transport next ? Maybe every kid who goes to public schools needs to get tested. Maybe lawyers and politicians and kindergarden teachers and astronauts and everyone else. Maybe everyone in the ******* country needs to be drug tested. God this issue is so dumb. I never understand why people waste time on this dumb ****.
Super User Root beer Posted June 8, 2011 Super User Posted June 8, 2011 Everybody that uses this forum ought to be drug tested. We've seen some odd posts on here..Remember that post by Bassclary about life? :D :D 1

Actually, Solantic is ineligible for government contracts. You're barking up the wrong tree.

A woman who was on the board of the FCC approved the Comcast NBC merger, even though it would pretty much create a monolpoy and the fact that a cable provider owns a network they could promote their network more than others and there is crazy room for abuse/corruption. Know what happened after the merger? That woman resigned from the FCC and is now president of ComcastNBC's government relations. I love this country...YIPPIEEE

TANF is a grant given to each state to run their own welfare program The money for assistance is provided by the Feds but the program is run by the state, hence the name FLORIDA Department of Children & Families. I'm far from an expert on welfare. I've seen it as a useful tool when used properly but I've seen it abused just as often.
