Super User BASSclary Posted June 6, 2011 Super User Posted June 6, 2011 Hey guys, thinking about picking up an Avid tomorrow and was wondering what the characteristics about it are. Stuff like if their more pwerful than their rating, if their actions are a little faster or slower, balance point with a lighter reel etc. Also, how's the customer service? If I snap a rod I want to be able to replace it. Thanks guys. To be more specific i'm looking at the 7' MH/F for larger plastics, jigs, but mostly spinnerbaits and shallow cranks. Quote
Stasher1 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 St. Croix rods, in general, are under rated. Their mediums tend to fall somewhere between most other companies' medium and medium-heavy ratings. Quote
Midnight Splash2 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 The customer service is excellent. I snapped a rod and got a new one in quick for 50 bucks. The M is closer to every one elses MH. They are under rated rods. Quote
Fat-G Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 They're tip heavy, I would save a little more and get a Dobyns Champion 704c. Quote

Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Great bang for the buck. It 7MH will do well for spinnerbaits, plastics and jigs but wouldn't be my first choice for cranks. It will also do admirably throwing buzzbaits, hollow belly swimbaits and other similar baits. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 7, 2011 Author Super User Posted June 7, 2011 Can anyone compare sensitivity wise to a Crucial ? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 The 7'MH-F is a bit tip heavy but it makes one helluva spinnerbait rod. I tend to put a heavier reel on mine, it helps balance it out a little better. Quote
ROCbass Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Lots of people are saying that the 7' MHF avid is tip heavy. I don't have this rod, but FWIW I do have the 6'6" MHF Avid and the 7' MHF mojo. The mojo is noticeably tip heavy with a light reel, but perfect with reels in the 8-9oz range IMO. I don't find my 6'6" avid to be tip heavy at all and I have my lightest reel on it, a BPS carbonlite. When I was originally looking at Avids I wanted the 7' MHF too, but I ended up with the 6'6" instead for the simple reason that it was on clearance and the 7' wasn't. I use mine for jigs and plastics mostly, and I have not yet encountered a situation where I felt the extra 6" would have made a big difference. If you're set on a 7 footer don't let me change your mind, but you might find that a slightly shorter rod balances better and still does everything you want it to do. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 The 7' MHF needs to have the right reel on it. I hated it with a TD-A on it, but it's great with a TD-X Flippng Reel. In general, they are understated in power. Their fast is pretty comparable to other comapny's fast. Their X-Fast is a really fast taper, especially on the spinning rods. Moderate action rods are a bit slower than you'd expect, but once you are into the butt section, there is plenty of power. I have a few that I use heavily, listed below, so if you have a question specific to a model, let me know. AVC62MXF AVC68MXF AVC70MHF AVC70MM AVC70MHM AVS63MLXF AVS63MXF AVS70MF Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 8, 2011 Author Super User Posted June 8, 2011 Thanks for your help guys. I felt the avid's pretty tip heavy which kinda put off. for less than the price of the Avid I got a BPS Prolite special reel (The daiwa copy) and a JOhnny Morris Signature series II 6'8" MH/XF (More of a Fast) for 160. Thanks for the Avid opinions! Quote
