Stiff1 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I caught this bass today in a little 3 acre retention pond. It was my first fish out of the pond, and it put up quite a fight. Bringing her in, it just didn't appear like a normal largemouth. Its color was very light, and it had various size spots randomly around it's back, and the eyes were an orangish/light brown color. I'm thinking it was a spotted bass, but I have never seen one or heard of anybody catching one around here. Either way she was a solid 3+ lbs and I hope I can bring her in again to get another look. So what kind of bass is this? Quote
dwtaylor Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Looks like a largemouth. I have caught several bass that had large dark spots on it similar to that one. I suppose it is kind of like birth marks or moles on humans. Just something a little different. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Pretty sure thats a largie, but yeah, it looks pretty weird. Quote
Stiff1 Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Thanks guys, I thought it was a largemouth at first, but after I pulled in a few more "standard" looking ones this one had me thinking. Thanks for the info! Quote
Fish Chris Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Yes, I'd say "Largemouth".... Just a pretty oddly colored / weird looking one. Then again, take a walk through Wal-Mart, and see if you don't see this fishes human counterpart LOL Fish Quote

I always feel like I'm going to get Hep B in there. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 6, 2011 Global Moderator Posted June 6, 2011 Just a strange colored largemouth. I've caught them with black marks all over them before but not quite like that one. Almost looks like the color the turn when they die but that fish certianly doesn't look dead! Quote
Super User senile1 Posted June 6, 2011 Super User Posted June 6, 2011 That appears to be a largemouth. In the future you can confirm it by checking to see if the mouth reaches back behind the eye when its mouth is closed. The mouth does not go behind the eye on a spot. Also, there is a distinct separation between the front and rear dorsal fins on largemouth bass. Nice fish by the way. Quote
southtexasbassin Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Several have been caught at Falcon lately. Quote
Midnight Splash2 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Those are called HIV Bass. Be sure you don't have any open wounds on you before sticking anything in its mouth. After handling one if you experience headaches, facial flushing, upset stomach, or loss of vision, consult your local doctor right away! Quote
gar-tracker Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Funny the eyes are that of a Suwanee Red Eye bass native only to the Suwanee River in Florida. Everything else points to a Largemouth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redeye_bass Quote

Midnight Splash2 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Which one? the odd spotted one or the nearly solid black bass? Both of them. The first one is just in an earlier stage. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 6, 2011 Super User Posted June 6, 2011 It's a largemouth. As far as I know we don't have spotted bass in northern IL Quote
