shakey head worm.....educate me..

this may sound dumb to some.... (hey, that rhymed)  

but... i need educated on how to fish a shakey head worm.

i don't own a boat so  95% of my fishing is fromt the bank.  i don't fish jigs much at all (afraid of getting hung up all the time).

when it comes to shakey head worms.... do you just rig them on a bare jig head?   and bounce them on the bottom or let them sit and "shake/wiggle" them just as the name says??  

sorry if this seems pretty stupid... but i didn't know if there was more to it than that.

i really want to start fishing jigs w/trailers and do the "shakey" thing to expand my techniques.  i already own some jigs and trailers but no shakey head worms.

what shakey head worm do you like best?  Zoom or Berkley?  and colors?  i'm goin' to Dick's tonight.  Bait Monkey is already in my car

I don't know how the lakes are there, but i did some shakey head fishing yesterday, and i don't care for it all that much. But the ONLY reason is because all of the places i fish have so much grass. Don't get me wrong they work great and I catch fish on them. fish them just how you described. let it sit semi slack in the line and shake it ( I do 15-20 shakes). But IMO it sucks in grass.I just don't like the exposed eye on the jighead. I bet it's killer in sandy or rock beds. I use zoom trick worms, gene larew salt craws,lizards,gambler sweebo worms.

You need for the plastic to stand as straight up as possible, so you need a jig head that is designed to do just that.

MegaStrike has some fantastic jig heads for the shaky head presentation that stands the worm straight up.

Other jig heads work so go to your favorite tackle shop and look for some 3/16 shaky head jig heads. Give 'em a try.

When fishing shaky heads from the bank, you may find a lot of bottom slop on the head after a retrieve.

Just wipe it off and throw out again.

If you are in rocks, use a football style jig head.

As long as you go with a shaky head designed jig you should do OK.

I like trick worms or plastics designed especially for the shaky head presentation.

You can use any type of plastic you want, even a lizard or a creature bait on a shaky head jig.

The secret is in having the jig hold the bait upright, with its tail wiggling in the water.

The Shak-e2 is very good! Your favorite plastic will work just fine,

but I would suggest the Rage Tail Lobster, GYCB Kut-Tail Khuna

and Roboworm 6" Shakin' Zipper.

Nope, you don 't "need" specific jigheads for shakey heading, been pouring mine since the mid 80 's, plain ordinary jighead with an oversized 3,4 & 5/0 hook. So as long as your jighead has a large enough hook you can shakeyhead.

On the other hand, newer shakeyheads do have intersting designs meant to meet more specific demands ( like stand up shakey heads ) but they are like everything else in this world of fishing, another tool to do a job.

If are fishing a shakey head where you may get hung up, just Tex pose the hook back into the worm, I rarely get my shakey head hung up. I also use spinning gear and lighter flourocaron line so I can be as finesse a possible. A lot of times they will nail it on the initial fall.  Be a line watcher because it will start to move off to one side before it even hits bottom. I like Robo worms and Zoom finesse. And I like to shake mine with a slightly slack line, slow and methodically.

 For me it's not the hook that gets hung up, it's the eye where you tie the line. That's another reason I'm not a big fan of jigs. to much grass and stumps in the lakes and ponds I fish around here.

if i use a regular jig head that doesn't stand up..... what's the point of using a jig head?  if it falls over to the side....wouldn't it be pretty much like a texas rig at that point?  

of course i do beleive that 95% of jigs will end up on their side anyway....so maybe i'm answering my own question   :-/  

i like the idea of it standing straight up ( 8-))  so, i should invest in the evolution.....but i can't get them at Dick's... what would be similar that they carry?  until i order some evolution online?

Dude, the jighead doesn 't have to make the bait stand up, a stand up jighead is to give that particular head down tails up look but it 's not a must, it 's only one of the many ways in which you make use of a tool to create a particular presentation.

The way the bait is attached to the jighead makes it behave differently than a T-rig so a T-rigged bait and a jighead rigged bait even though rigged weedless look and behave differently, so differently that to give you an example: A couple of months ago I and a pal were fishing at a nearby lake, for about an hour I hit them hard with a T-rigged finesse worm, 6 lb test and a 1/16 th oz bullet head sinker without even a sniff, changed the rig for one of my jigheads; the same worm, same line, same weight and I began catching fish. It was not the bait what made the difference, it was the rigging method, the rigging method gave the bait another presentation.
