snapshotmd Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Would you be a boater or non-boater? One piece of advice I could give you is to learn how to pitch and flip... well. I found P&F absolutely essential! Quote
MikeOGNR Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 Most likely i will be a non boater joining a club i do have a little john boat so i can get out on the water but its not tournament material also what is pitching a flipping and when should i use it? also what baits to use it on please respond Quote
Super User slonezp Posted June 1, 2011 Super User Posted June 1, 2011 Sounds like you have a long road ahead of you. There are thousands of posts and videos on this site give you more info than you could ever absorb. Your going to have to join a club. I would recommend a small or local club to get your feet wet and see if tourney fishing is really for you. It's not all chocolate bars and gumdrops. As a non boater you will be limited as to how much tackle you can bring with you so the stuff you choose will need to be what you are confident using. You will also be limited in your prefising. MikeOGNR Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 So really confidence is the key here so my main baits would be a rubber worm a jerkbait (rapala orignal floater) and a spinnerbait also some lizards and senkos but i also want to get into crankbait fishing Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 1, 2011 Super User Posted June 1, 2011 Join a club that doesn't mind teaching a novice on how to fish for bass and go from there. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 So i really should join as a non boater first ive been fihing since i was six and i understand the concept and alot about bass fishing when i fished my first tournament i really loved it and i just want to get into it more also what gear shouldi get and about how many rods persay also im just wondering if you all could share what baits you all use during tournaments like your top 3 or 5 about any help would be greatly appreciated. Super User J Francho Posted June 1, 2011 Super User Posted June 1, 2011 Just use what you usually use, pay attention, and add to your arsenal as you learn. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 So wut im using now is pretty good i see also what is a good strtegy for pre fishing Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 1, 2011 Super User Posted June 1, 2011 If you can prefish with your boater, that would be ideal. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 One more question when im fishing a tournament what fish should i aim for largemouth or smallmouth? Quote
snapshotmd Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Do a search on Pitching and Flipping here. Also, lots of youtube videos so you could see what it looks like. Respectfully, I don't think you are at the level of targeting. Just catch fish and have fun doing it. Judging from your questions, you have a lot to learn. Probably the best thing to do is to read whatever you can on bass fishing, practice your casting in the backyard (especially pitching & flipping), and join a local club as a non-boater. In my mind, the most important thing is to cast accurately to put the bait in front of bass. Trust me on this. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Okay thanks for all the help guys and what are some good practice tips for in the yard like any sort of drills or things i should use to improve my casting techniques? Quote
snapshotmd Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 throw some targets out on the lawn and try to hit them with your casting plug. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Thank you for all the help also i would like to know where i could find these nh bass clubs cause tahts where i fish Quote
UPS VT Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Try to find some clubs here: http://www.nhbassfednation.com/clubs.asp Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Thanks everyone one more final question i have a fish finder and im wondering how do ppl use it to find fish and such do they just use the fish finder or do they get maps along with it also i would like to know how to identify underwater structure such as drop offs and shoals weed beds and such like on a depth map and on the fish finder i have a eagle cuda 300 portable and am looking to utilize it more to find fish Quote
UPS VT Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 You really need to use maps to have a good idea of where to start looking. You could also get a hand held GPS and a Navionics chip that will have maps with depth charts for several lakes. Quote
MikeOGNR Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Where would i get one of these handheld gps and navionics maps chips for nh lakes if you could post a good fairly cheap one with the navionics chip it would be great something around 100-200 dollars for the whole setup Quote
