shootermcbob Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 I know this will make me sound like a homer, but there is a large difference in the accusations and also how the universities handled it. The only major charge against Michigan was the lack of institutional control that was handed down due to the probation against U of M from the fab five days. They were cleared on all charges except the charge of practicing 20 minutes too long. Which after it was identified was later changed by definition in the ncaa guidelines. So to compare practicing too long and the possibilities that players were being given improper benefits and that there was an active cover up is unfair. Unlike osu, Michigan also had a media outlet who was fabricating most of the alledged items and the university hired an outside firm to investigate the allegations. They were very transparent during the whole process. Osu is handling their own investigation and through the FOIA more and more is coming out. Not that their was a communication error about forms being filled out, but that the warning signs of undocumented cars, vacations, housing problems, etc. This was by no way a one man show covering this up. If this happened at U of M I would hope they would have cleared house and start over. I said all along that if they found Rich guilty of a coverup or guilty of lack of institutional control then they had to fire him. Two very different scenarios, but a fair question to ask. I agree w/ how the situation was handled...ie, Michigan did it the way it should have been done. Take your punishment and live to fight another day. I also agree w/ your statement "time to get tough & enforce the rules", however, it is much different saying it and doing it. Take the Cam Newton issue, he skates because he said ...I didn't know??? What if Pryor says...I didn't know??? The system is broken, impossible to enforce much of anything so long as most coaches keep that "plausible deniability" defense going. I don't know what the answer is, but I think the stuff happening at Ohio State happens at ALL major universities to some degree. The difference is just who is going to make a mistake and get caught. As far as Tressel goes, all he had to do was forward the email to OSU AD and he would still be there. Instead, he has made himself and Buckeyes everywhere the butt of every joke for the next however many years. Quote
Vance Jones Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 bill stewart will not be on the sidelines for wvu this fall. he will not be the head coach he will be gone.. and i would be very surprised if he wasn't gone from wvu within the next 2 weeks colin dunlap a former wvu beat writer who now covers the pittsburgh pirates dropped a bombshell on this whole holgorsen fiasco. coach stewart was calling reporters and asking them all if they could find any dirt at all on holgorsen back in december. specifically asking for DWI's and alochol related incidents. colin dunlap said that stewart personally called him and asked him for that information. the cross lanes casino incident. the bartender wouldnt' give him another drink, the casino had no idea who the man was. holgorsen was sitting outside before the police even showed up someone else called and gave the casino people the name of that person. all of the other incidents were fabricated lies. this was an active engagement in smearing dana holgorsen so that coach stewart could keep his job. nothing more and nothing less. SDoolittle Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Cam Newton knew it was wrong. Jim Tressel tried to cover it up. USC got what they deserved. WVU is turning into a soap opera. I'm just glad that there has never been any controversy surrounding my beloved Sooners! Quote
Vance Jones Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 and now pryor is leaving ohio state. he shouldn't have been allowed to leave. he should've been kicked off of the team by the coach before the coach resigned. it was his player who cared so little for his coach that started it all. 2 Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 I'm wondering when it's going to get announced that the NCAA will be stripping Ohio State of the 02 title. Quote
Vance Jones Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 osu should've never won that game. the cane defensive back didn't interfere with that pass. and i'm no canes fan but that ref blew the call bigger than monica lewinsky ever blew anything Quote
shootermcbob Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I'm wondering when it's going to get announced that the NCAA will be stripping Ohio State of the 02 title. Wishful thinking. Sorry, I have the game taped, and everytime I watch it, Ohio State wins. I also have last years game taped, I can make you copies??? Quote

I also have last years game taped, I can make you copies??? All I'll say is Maurice Clarett. But lets not delve into that fiasco. USC just got stripped of a title in a game that they certainly won. I wasn't speaking anything about the game. I doubt it'll happen, but Tressel was in charge, etc etc. You never know what the heck the NCAA is going to do. I honestly don't think the NCAA knows what they're going to do until somebody says it in front of a microphone. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 I watched an interesting article on the local news this evening. Bobby Knight is in town for some sort on banquet. When being interviewed by the local media, someone asked what Bobby thought of the NCAA. He said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that the NCAA hasn't got a clue. They make up stupid rules and enforce them against people like Kressel, all the while ignoring the most blatant violations, such as athletes who stop going to class, yet still are allowed to compete. Regardless of what you think about Knight, he calls a spade a spade. BTW, I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread, so let's leave Knight out of this. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted June 7, 2011 Super User Posted June 7, 2011 I love Bobby Knight. lol Thanks for giving me a good smile thinking about him hurling that chair, Mike. Quote

I am a big Bobby Knight fan, but he has this situation wrong. Being a tOSU graduate and good friend with Jim Tressel he is continually standing by Tressel and the university in a situation Knight is just incorrect on. Quote
Vance Jones Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 bobby knight is a clown. any grown man who throws temper tantrums the way he does shouldn't be in any position of teaching young men on how to act. period. i teach my son constructive ways to take out the anger and he's only 7. not to throw things around, yell scream and get into people's faces. people and kids look up to him, and when they see him acting that way and being successful it clicks in their mind that it has to be ok or accepted. it adds to that dogma that if you are good at what you do you can get away with lots of things. he's a buffon for sticking up for tressel in this series of incidents. tressel cheated, dont' care if you think the ncaa rules are childish or not. he's in a profession which are governed by those rules he knows those rules and he broke them time and time again. that's cheating and for anyone to stand by him shows that they too condone cheating. after all the smoke clears, the next thing the ncaa is going to look into are the autograph collectors. terrel pryor got 40,000$ from one of those guys, his name is the on the checks that pryor deposited into his own bank account. that's pay to play right there. osu is going to get some serious sanctions dropped on them for all of this. but all colleges need to be wary now, because the cat is out of the bag and it isn't hard to see who is doing what around these kids. 1 Quote
