zdunham Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 Well, today was my first test of the toad, it was drizzly and overcast with barely any breeze, almost still most of the time, I tried the lilly pad area first and nothing was around, so I moved to the grassy flats and was just bringing the toad over the top of the holes in the matted grass. I had 4 different fish, only caught one just a little over 2 lbs (that's decent for PA sadly). The one I caught took the thing 4 times before it got the hook (it kept comin), I'm using a 5/0 hook, not wide gap which could be the issue with the lack of a good hook set? The other three never got hooked and they hit multiple times each so clearly this rage toad gets fish to bite and love it. Any ideas? Maybe I just have a really bad hook set lol Quote
rondef Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 You should be using a 5/0 EWG hook with the toad. I have been fishing the Rage Tail toads for over a year now and I have caught a lot of bass with them. I use the Gamakatsu heavy wire 5/0 EWG hooks, the heavy wire hook gives it a keel effect so the toad runs right side up all the time. Quote
CRFisher Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Anyone hear of the shads being hit by Stripers - either fresh water or salt? The herring have been running up river near my house so I've been mostly fishing "herring" looking baits. I've been starting my outings with the Rage Shad. First cast is right in front of the opening of a fish ladder and I'm 2 for 2 on my first cast. Salt water stripers have run up river following the herring so I'm hoping for more than LM or SM. Quote
Big-O Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I have found that anywhere Stripes are eating shad on the surface, they'll eat the Rage Shad too....as you've seen. They'll also eat it sub surface rigged on a 1/4 oz swimbait hook Glad you're havin' fun with'em Big O www.ragetail.com Quote
Super User CWB Posted June 4, 2009 Super User Posted June 4, 2009 Looks like another member of the RageTail army! Quote
CRFisher Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Just to clarify, I'm catching largemouth on the shad, they feed on the herring as well. I'm hoping for striper though, it would be nice to land one 3 miles inland on freshwater gear. I find with the shad the hookups are easier too than with frogs, the shad is a little bit thinner giving it more bite. Hoping for a BPS Fathers Day coming up, then I'll load up on Space Monkeys and Anacondas. Quote
Crankhead Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I've used the RT shad weightless just skimming it across the top. But have not t-rigged it with a weight. How would you fish the shad with this set up? Quote
Big-O Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 I've used the RT shad weightless just skimming it across the top. But have not t-rigged it with a weight. How would you fish the shad with this set up? If you use a swimbait hook on the Rage Shad along with a 1/8 to 3/16 oz bullet slip weight, you can run the shad deep like a crankbait or swimbait. It takes this additional weight to get deep and keep it there because the bait surfaces so easy. I will throw this rig instead of a spinnerbait in many situations... Big O www.ragetail.com Quote

Captain Chaos II Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Might have been coincidence but I did catch my personal best 8 lber on a green/red flake rage tail lizard during the spawm. Caught a 6 lber this past weekend with the 10" anaconda. Both texas rig. Tis the season for big worms.... Both of those beat my best bass from 2008. Not saying I wouldn't have caught them with a different bait but I'm kind of a believer now .... Quote
bocabasser Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 My favorite is the Space Monkey. It has been, and continues to be, my top producer this year. It also produced my biggest fish this year. The Space Money is very versatile. You can run it on the surface like a frog, or rigged on a lightly weighted hook you can swim it just under the surface. sshhhhhh. i too like the space monkey. it puts a limit in the boat right quick. Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 10, 2009 Super User Posted June 10, 2009 After reading Catt's pist re: experiment, I got ta thinkin...has anyone t rigged the toad, with a bullet weight..? Any reason Not to tyr something like that, i.e. would it impair the actoin of the toad..? BTW TW just got my chart/pearl belly toads in.. Quote
JaxBasser Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I was shopping in the mall here with my fiance (ohh fun...lol) when I realized they put a Dicks Sporting Goods in there. I went in and was very excited to see that they had the rage tail baits. I picked up some of the Anacondas. Quote
