Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 think this will be ok for 500 pounds or less?? me and a friend and cooler and stuff... id throw it in my truck and would cost me 300bucks. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 30, 2011 Super User Posted May 30, 2011 You'd more than likely be fine fishing out of that. Just keep your eyes out for gators in some of the canals. Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 What's the boat in your pic? I'd love a foot control on that size boat Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted May 30, 2011 Super User Posted May 30, 2011 They work great! I have fished at least 30 days from one of those this year already!1 Jeff Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks guys. So I won't have a problem with weight? I'm only 180 but my friend is 225 plus beer and rods ya know? That's the only thing I am worried about. I don't want to be nervous about tipping over. Plus, a battery and telling motor, for this price, I am pretty excited about it. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted May 30, 2011 Super User Posted May 30, 2011 I am 175, my buddy is 160 and we have no problem with trolling motor, battery, .410 shotgun, 4-6 rods, 2 tackle boxes and a small cooler with drinks! Jeff Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Room for a stripper pole? Hahah. Thanks for the help. Just found a John boat 12ft for same price without the motor. That strangely might be too big for the idea I am going with. I again thank you for the help. Let's see what happens. Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 One more thing... Can I paint this type of material? Quote
JaxBasser Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Those little pontoon boats are incredibly stable. You are to REALLY try to tip one over. That thing will be 10x more stable than a 10 or 12 foot jon boat. You can even stand and fish from them. I have a 10 footer made out of the same material. The owner before me painted it camo for duck hunting and the paint scratches off super easy, he may have just done a poor job though. Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Krylon Fusion is an ABS plastic paint. Use it for the trim on my truck and last forever. I honestly think with me running and putting feet on there it will come off. I am curious if there is a sticker material I could wrap on it. The ugly tan has to go. Will I be able to add some rod holders for trolling? I'm thinking not because there will be no way for me to put a nut on the bolt. Unless I got long bolts maybe. Anyways, I talked the guy down to 180 and a used iPhone 3G from work. Picking it up tomorrow. I will post more pics once it is here. Quote
Busbey Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Will I need to register this boat in the state of Florida? Is there a minimum length of say 10ft or something? Quote
JaxBasser Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 If it has any kind of motor on it you need to register it for use on public water. Make sure he has a title. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 30, 2011 Super User Posted May 30, 2011 If it has any kind of motor on it you need to register it for use on public water. Make sure he has a title. Exactly right. Most people don't know about that. It is ANY kind of motor on it whether it's in use or not, electric or gas. If you're just using oars and have no motor on the vessel, then you don't need to register it. Quote
Jim McC Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I have the 8' Pelican Bass Raider, and it is very stable. The problem you'll have is lack of room, not weight. There's no way I would even consider having a second person in my boat. There's just no room, and I don't bring much with me. That boat is only one foot longer than mine. Quote
Busbey Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 found this for about the same price. i like this one MUCH better.. thoughts? Quote
Jim McC Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 found this for about the same price. i like this one MUCH better.. thoughts? The other one may be a little more stable because the bottom is totally flat. Is this one longer? Did you try them both out for stability and room? Quote
Busbey Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 i have not. they are both no where near eachother an an hour away from my house. i just like this one better for the design and the fact it has a foot control motor. Quote
Busbey Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 what i lier this guy is. i get there and the motor doesnt work, broken hinges, cracks in the boat, no top to livewell or battery compartment. trailer has flat tires. also he says it has been sitting the this boat yard i went to (a friend of him owns it) for 2 months and the guy said it has been there for over 9 or 10 months. i pretty much just walked away. 200 bucks or not, i want no part of this deal. so i called my dad and was just chatting with him about what happened and mentioned that he still talks to the guy that he sold our boat to. this boat was the boat i pretty much learned how to fish in and drive, etc etc. i asked dad to call the guy and see what he wanted for it. maybe you guys still have it, but it would be nice to get this boat and keep it forever and be able to say that this was my dads boat and i learned to fish in it.. its a 13ft v hull john boat. very wide and we painted it cammo pretty nice. more of a green look than cammo with a tan bottom. anyways, id love to see how it looks now, 18 years later. would be a nice feeling to restore it and use it ya know? this would be ok to put a 15 or 20hp motor and foot control on with decks, etc etc. think its big enough to tool around at the Lox with????? JaxBasser Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 The other one may be a little more stable because the bottom is totally flat. Is this one longer? Did you try them both out for stability and room? I have that same boat. It's very stable. Two can easily stand and fish out of it. It's too bad it turned out to be a POS. They are great little boats. Quote
Louiem Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I was out at LOX last Saturday and saw at least three of them both with two anglers in each, they were getting around with no problems. I have one also for me and my son but use it only in the back yard. I think you will enjoy it!!!! found this for about the same price. i like this one MUCH better.. thoughts? Quote

A 13 foot Jon at Lox should do fine. In fact, you will be able to reach some of the shallower areas that the big glass boats can't get into. Regarding decks, trolling motor and battery, gas tank and a outboard, plus gear and passengers, keep in mind the weight of everything you are adding to the 13' boat. Try to keep the boat as lite weight as possible. If you want to build a deluxe fishing platform from a Jon, it might be better to look for a 16' hull with a wider beam. Quote
