JellyMan Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Well as MOST of you know, jig fishing can be incredible for numbers and size. I went to BPS last week and decided to pick up a swimming jig with rattle and a double tail chunk and give jig'in a go. I have never fished with jigs until yesterday. Well, it was incredible. In 2 hours I caught 14 bass and one 9lbs. I also hooked into had to be a 15lber and when I set the hook, it was so heavy I broke my 10lb mono. Braid is back lol. If you havnt done any jig fishing I highly recommend picking up a few, learning the techniqs, and getting out there. I know it's been said but I had to say it again. As a Basser for 18 years and just descovered jig fishing, I needed to vent my stoke for these incredible lures! GO JIG'IN!!! Quote

The huge one I broke off on tho was kinda in the open as I was jiggin the bottom. I;m not sure if she was hangin there or I drug her out of the cover and she followed it. Quote

I feel your pain about losing that fish....i am an avid muskie fisherman and at the end of the last year i lost a 50+ muskie because my liter snapped, but thats what keeps you going out to try and get her again Quote

The best time to use them is : any time and all the time !! You can bottom bouce them, swim them thru suspended bass, flip 'em & pitch 'em, drift with them. Allways have one rigged up & ready. EastTexasBassin Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I always have a jig tied on these days. As Benobreath said, the best time to fish a jig is anytime you are on the water. On my last trip I started using RageTail Lobsters as a trailer and the results were freakin awesome. I highly recommend putting a RT Lobster on your jig. The action is irresistible. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 7, 2009 Super User Posted June 7, 2009 Jigs may be the one of oldest artificial baits. I like to swim against the current and try different things. I have been using a saltwater "flats" jig and it has been a good freshwater producer. I can work it in a traditional manner, I can use it similar to a top or subsurface lure, I can make it resemble a fly with a flutter action. I've yet to try a trailer in freshwater but have used a trailer for saltwater use. Quote

Mottfia Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Alot of people have a hard time adjusting to fishing the jig. its got a high learning curve and can get you skunked a few times before things start to go your way. Trust me I have been through it all with this lure but you have to stick with it. They have two properties that I love. The biggest is that they can be fished anywhere a fish lives...and stay there for as long as it takes. The second is that they catch bigger than average fish. Jelly Man, I'm glad that you have such an awesome start wih the lure. Keep it up and keep posting about your jig bites to convince a few more people to try them out. Mottfia Quote

I have found that i like the Net Bait Paca Craw more than the Rage Tail bait as a trailer. When the Paca Craw comes to rest the claws float up and look like the natural defensive position f a crawfish. I feel like that is a more natural presentation. Quote

Evening jig fishing or cloudy days seem to produce better size and numbers. This is the only bait that I am logging in my head. I am also finding that green/brown/rootbeer got more reaction than my green/purple/rootbeer kinda bluegill or brim lookin. The more natural color jig produced better so far. Quote
The Outdoorsman Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I love to jig fish with fishing a tube a very very very close second. You can fish a jig all the time and works great around rocks, grass, sunken trees, etc. Dont be afraid to mix and match your trailer with your jig too. And keep it simple like with soft plastics as well when it comes to colors. But its that trailer that will sometimes spark that bite because it may be a different color or shade. Example, was fishing with one of my handmade jigs in black an blue with a match black and blue trailer. Well I changed the trailer out for a Summer Craw pattern by NetBait (I love their chunks) and immediately I started to get hits on it and turned a bad day into a great day. Keep with it and glad to have another jig fisherman on the water. Oh and I also would recommend using BANG! Pure Craw scent, it works great. Quote
Mottfia Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I agree with outdoorsman on keeping it simple. I have a few confidence colors and trailers. I also like to fish a jig with the same color trailer. I got a kick out of the last post because I have been using summer craw paca chunks for a little while with good success. Davis Jigs makes a large number of their jigs to match the netbait colors ( I think the owners a good friends) so I can have a good color match every time. If you get a chance check out the Alabama Craw. It works well in stained water..which happens to be productive for jigs Mottfia Quote
