fishingkidPA Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 today my dad and my brother and I went down to the allegheny river. First we were catching some small smallmouths. Then we dediced to use bait for some big carp and cats.We used Burger King French Fries, lol. We went up one of my favorite tributaries about 100 yards and chummed it up. We caught 4 channel cats, weighing from 1-4 lbs. my dad was using a ML pole with 6 lb test. We started to hear the drag scream and we saw a huge carp surface, way bigger than the one im about to catch. i wanna say it was 15 lber. well it didnt spool him but it did hang him up on a lug under the water and he was lost. I was using my medium action baitcaster with 12 lb test. and i feel something take it, i set the hook, and now we have figured out there is a snag about 15 feet to my right were we lost 3 fish. I had my drag turned up all the way and it was just tearin it out. I ended up having to use my thumb. it was a great fight that lasted about 5-10 min. Pretty relaxing fishing bait every once in a while, its nice getting to relax for once. haha well here are some pics. the pic of the channel cat my dad got an action shot of with flapping it tail all over me, lol. and the carp i wanna say was 10 lb. and for size reference im about 5'10" 160 lb. TerryR Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Man, carp are fun to catch, they fight like hell. Good stuff. Quote
fisherman2014 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 How exactly would you recommend catching carp? As in what bait, time, and place. Quote
fishingkidPA Posted June 3, 2011 Author Posted June 3, 2011 carp- anytime, but probably better at dawn and dusk. bait- sweet corn or bread dough work best i have found place- basically any were, they are an invasive species found almost in any lake or river. look if "chumming" is legal in your state. usaully ill throw out a handful of corn that brings them in. brings a medium action rod or bigger especially if your fishing around snags like submerged timber. were im at a little mouth of a tributary in the river tons of snags so you need to hall them out quick. catching one 10lb's or more isn't rare. if there already there might as well enjoy them! fun to fish for when the bass arent hitting ill guarantee carp are, so will cats. cats hit on sweet corn to. TerryR Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Bread balls and corn work well, like fishingkidpa said. I also have caught them on pieces of glazed donut, with frosted flake chum. They also sell carp dough bait, but I don't know if it works or not. I fish for them when I just want to sit back and relax, drink a few beers, and have fun. Quote
CoBass Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Carp get a bad rap as bottom feeding, nest robbing, garbage fish but they can actually be caught with artificials too. I've caught them on tube jigs and x-raps while bass fishing. Mouth hooked too, not snagged. We have guys around here that specifically target them with fly rods using nymphs and small crawdad patterns. Believe it or not, they are also rated as one of the smartest fresh water fish. Look it up, I did and was surprised at what I found. It's still disappointing to set the hook on what you think is a real pig only to find out it's a carp. They do fight hard though...CoBass Quote
fisherman2014 Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I tried bottom fishing them once, and didn't catch anything because I was watching them swim around on the top. Any suggestions? Quote

fisherman2014 Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 I thought about using a bobber, but they were only really eating things that were floating on the top, so I didn't know what to use that would float. Quote
fishingkidPA Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 I thought about using a bobber, but they were only really eating things that were floating on the top, so I didn't know what to use that would float. when you see them on top they are basically impossible to catch, its so frustrating watching them swim around but wont take anything! bassfisher2 Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Use a clear bubble float with crusty bread on the hook or small round dog biscuits superglued to the hook , surround the bait with free offerings . Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Carp bait = stale bread, kool aid mix, enough water to make dough balls Quote

He surprised the audience with the news that, while the average fish has an IQ of 6, carp are relative geniuses, with an IQ of 12. Carp also have excellent color vision, an especially well-developed sense of taste and smell, which is really one sense for fish, and they are blessed with exceptionally keen hearing. Knowing this, it is easy to understand why carp pose such a challenge for fly fishermen." Check out this website: http://carponthefly.blogspot.com/ Quote
