Tobias Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Hey guys, Im new in Virginia Beach I just moved here from Germany and I used to fish for carp, catfish and others, but since there is a lot of bass here I wanna try to catch some. I already caught some bass here but nothing big and I thought you could help me here because you know what kind of fish there is and where to go... So I got some question here and I would be happy if some of you could help me out. At first I live near Lake James and I hoped you could tell me some nice places to go, unfortunately Lake James is only for people living there. - What kind of bass lives here? - What are some good lures for that bass? (and by the way i dont have a boat so I fish from the banks) - Where are some good lakes or rivers to fish? Quote

I would recommend you check the Locale Fishing Forum and I think there is a thread going in there for Southeast Section pertaining to the same question of people looking for fishing in VA Beach area. If you can not find it, just search for Virginia Beach in that threads search blank and it should pop up. As far as Lake James, do not know. I use to live in Newport News and can tell you all about that area. But, I would start by fishing with 5" Senkos, probably a dark purple, junebug color and fish slow. Hope this helps. Wdy Quote

In the spring you also might try a crawfish soft plastic. good colors would be brown and orange, black and yellow and any dark blues or greens. A red or purple 7.5 inch Culprit worm work wonders on summer evenings. you will be surprised what you can reel in from the shore or a decent dock. you might try Western Branch Reservoir, there is alot of info on that lake. I also use Google earth religiously to find places to fish from shore (i dont have a bass boat either). tight lines... -Sean Quote

jjadkisson Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 In Virginia Beach check out Lake Smith. The tournament trail I fish, hits that spot once or twice in a sesaon and I fish there pretty regularly. Lake Bradburn is also a productive lake. If you want to catch Bass in these Hampton Roads/Suffolk lakes you want to be using Black & Blue or Green Pumpkin soft plastics ie. trick worms, baby brush hogs, any creature baits, crawfish etc. When it gets hot in the summer you are going to want to break out the spinning gear and be fishing trick worms on shakey heads...think finesse. You can fish spinner baits and crank baits all you want and you will probably have decent luck depending on when and where you are fishing them. Right now with the water temps in the high 40's, you can use a #8 or #9 Shad Rap chrome w/ black back or blue back and clean up if you work it off of main lake points... These fish around here are more than likely going to start spawning the first full moon of March and no later than the first full moon of April. If you've never "bed fished" you need to get out during this time and look for beds. Use them soft plastic creature baits I mentioned and the color you choose can be pretty radical during that time, as in it's not totally important. If you put the bait on the fish's nose, and it's on bed...it's going to hit it. You can learn a lot from fishing the spawn and bed hunting/sight fishing. You'll have a lot of fun too. If you are military I can give you my "slump buster" lake where you can rent a jon boat & trolling motor and guarantee catching bass between 3 and 7 pounds every trip... I don't use that lake much now because I have my own boat and discovered a ton of local lakes that I'm trying to "figure out" the secrets of.
