Shane Procell Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 This week I fished down south with EvergladesBasser (Tom). He put on a "Big Easy" clinic. I'am definately a believer. Lost count of all the(his) fish. Good times and a great guy! Today me and another friend/guide, fished same water, but a little farther north. Boated 2 8#'s and a few in the 3-4# range. We were throwing BIG stuff. Quote
topwaterrob Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 2 8's nice..... Where do you put in at on the trail, I need a break from Holiday and the Alley..... Quote
Shane Procell Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 It is just like Holiday Park, just not as beat up. 12.1 miles west of chrome ave (hwy 27) and S.W 8th st. (Tamiami Tr). Boat ramp on right. Quote

SoFl-native Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Nice shane Love the big sneezy. Get more fish per bait too over a dipper. Quote
gar-tracker Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Are you fishing the ramp over the hill or going into L 67 (Holiday)? That magic canal over the brim is off the charts, I cant tell you how many hogs Iv pulled out of there back in the day. Hard to fish with 2 dudes. you have to make long casts in front of the boat due to the narrow nature of the canal. In February on a cool calm day throw a big floating rapala and let it sit for about 3 months and a day, they bed off that coral and sit and watch it, a little twitch and it looks like someone threw a bowling ball on the bait. I weighed a 13 3/4 for a guy once at the ramp. It had eyes like golf balls. Biggest fish Iv seen live. Quote

I don't think I can get my aircraft carrier, er Triton, in and out to fish it. Many large dumb bass! Quote
Shane Procell Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 The Magic canal has lost its magic with this low water. I was launching into L-67. The flood gate is slightly open on L-68. Dead sticking a worm on the up current side of the gate produced 7 fish from 4#-8# in a couple of hours for a buddy of mine yesterday. Quote
GLADES Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I have never been to Tamiami trail. I need to check it out one of these days. Quote
Super User South FLA Posted May 30, 2011 Super User Posted May 30, 2011 Nice trip Shane, the HEAT is on! Quote
GLADES Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I fished the Miami canal today 5/30 off of alligator alley. I bottomed out my prop backing my boat off the trailer at the SW ramp. Be careful if launching over there. The water is full of algae bloom and down about 3-4 feet. Not a single hit in 1.5 hours. I decided to pack up and give Sawgrass a try. It turned out to be a good decision. I headed east a couple of miles and then turned around and drifted west with the wind. I bagged 3 bass in 1 hour, 2 dinks and a 5# chunk on gambler ez's. The 5# bass followed the swimbait like a submerged submarine pushing a wave before attacking. I was glad I made a long cast. The water was relatively clear there too. The ramp was OK, but the parking situation was kind of tight. Quote

It is in the middle of the SW launch...the water is so green with algae you cannot even see the washout which sits about 6inches underwater. You can go left or right of it and be OK. We went north into the Miami Canal, first thing. Very first cast, my son hooked about a six foot gator which grabbed his spro frog. He got to fight the gator for a while, before he spit the hook. We caught three bass there in about an hour...one was about 3lb, but the fishing was very slow. I tried running west through the weir...no luck, too shallow. My boat drafts 8inches and I was bottoming out. I then loaded up the boat and tried the SE launch at MM35 to try and get into that other canal system and hopefully some cleaner water. The water is too low/ramp too steep...can't launch. Same thing at MM32. Ramp too steep. I continued back East and down to Holiday Park. A ton of boats out there...we ran down to the Miami canal and fished there. There's a ton of bass in there but super small which was fine for me. I didn't even wet my line...playing guide to my son unhooking him from bass and/or trees (he has to cast it himself now ). He ended up catching 14 in the hour and a half we were there. Quote

I will not be back to Miami canal until the water comes up. IMO..When the lake stopped pumping water south, it seems like all the agricultural run off is the only south flow of water. All the fertilizers and stuff are choking off the oxygen. Not very good. It is cool that your son likes to fish. I have a 3year old daughter that likes to practice casting (with help) my spinning rod on the driveway. It wont be long before I will take her fishing. As I mentioned, the water clarity was very good at Sawgrass. How was the water clarity at Holiday Park? I normally do not fish at Sawgrass, it has been years since my last trip prior to Sunday. The canal system is limited, but right now it seems like a good place to go with the low and poor quality water. I almost made the run down to Tamiami trail(topic of thread, sorry to get off track), but it was almost noon and I had things to do. Never been to the Tamiami trail ramp, but I will head down there when I can get an earlier start. Got to see this magic canal next to the L67. Quote
piscicidal Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I hear you. I wonder about the ramps down at Tamiami...if they are anything like those at the Alley, I can't use them. I wouldn't want to make that drive only to turn around and not fish. Shane, are those ramps pretty "steep" with this water level? How about that "magic canal" ramp? That one seems fairly remote looking at Google Maps...I wonder if there are issues with theft/vandalism there? The water clarity in L67 was terrible yesterday. Strong east winds plus all those big boats running around on Memorial Day...the water was really muddy. The Miami Canal section was much clearer. We were pretty much sight fishing. My son loves to fish. I've got a thread in the "My Fishing Trip or Tournament" forum with him in some videos. He was up at O-dark thirty yesterday morning ready to go. He already has two tackle boxes full of stuff. I've created a monster. Quote
Shane Procell Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 The ramp at L-67 has plenty of water, so does the L-67A. Quote

Thanks I'll give it a shot and switch it up a bit... Haven't been down there in many years and couldn't even remember where to get in at.... fished the Miami canal North out of Holiday on sunday. caught a bunch of little ones with a few keepers thrown in..... evrgladesbasser Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hey Guys, In reference to the questions about ramps... L67 off of Tamiami has a good ramp, the "magic" canal I'm not sure about. Sawgrass North ramp (off US27). Holeylands and fingers also have good ramps. All of these ramps have low angles, and you won't feel like your backing your boat off a cliff. These are the good low water ramps I know of. Quote
bocabasser Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 the king of the glades classic is this sunday and the tournament director took the holey lands and the turnaround on the alley off of the list for places because the water is too low. the holey lands are unlaunchable and the wiers on the alley are unpassable. the only 3 locations left for the classic are lox, sawgrass and belle glade. we will find out saturday night. On my rig I would have to back my truck tires up to the dang waters edge to drive the Ranger sled off of the trailer. Quote
