Trap Shooting

Does anyone else here shoot trap? If so, what is your average. Mine is 17.5, but this is my first year doing it, so I'm not complaining. Also, if you do, do you use a actual trap gun or just your grouse/pheasant gun? I use a Baikal IZH 27 o/u I take grouse hunting.

I started trap shooting last year and I picked it up pretty quick.

I used to use a friends' 870 or Benelli, but that was before I got my own 870.

I just shoot for fun so I don't know what my average is. What's the average based on?

I shoot in the local club league, average is how many birds on average you hit out of the 25 you shoot at.

I shoot sporting clays. I have been competing for about 3 yrs now! I actually have a couple dedicated sporting guns, with one LH Browning 425 Gold Sporter for sale right now if anyone needs one!

Ive never shot competitively, but I shoot a ton of traps every year to get ready for duck season. I will normally hit anywhere between 92-97 traps out of a 100. It usually makes me feel pretty good about my shootin...then I got hunting. Its something about shooting a live duck that is so much trickier than a straight flying clay!

When I lived in MN, I was a big pheasant hunter. So part of what I did to stay sharp was trap shoot. A lot. I load my own shells and would go through 10k+ rounds a year at the range. Camaraderie was part of it too, as my favorite hunting partner shot a lot of trap also. My average was 24 at 16 yards. Gun is a dedicated trap gun, Browning BT99+, signature series.

Since moving here to NW Ark 6 years ago, where there are no pheasants, my shotgun shooting has fallen off almost completely. But I did run 50 straight the last time I was out to the range a year or so ago.

Fun sport. Hope you continue to shoot and improve.

ive shot trap a couple times before. I use my mossberg 500. its fun but i don't remember my average

My father shoots trap - a lot. And that's an understatement.

He uses a custom-fitted Benelli and does very, very well. In fact, he just placed in the top 5 in the country in his age group!

I've gone out with him a few times, and usually plink off somewhere around 15-18 targets. So I'm about average.

Then I went to his friend's private, custom built facility. Words cannot describe this place. It's something like a golf course, but for trap. It has, I don't know, 50 or so "holes" where each place is set up different from the next. Sometimes the targets will scoot across the ground, other times they'll shoot nearly straight up, or skip across water, or even bounce off trampolines. It's crazy stuff. It has a couple of "courses", a regular trap range, a rifle range, and camping facilities. I guess this place holds an annual event as part of the professional tour, but other than that, it's totally private. It's world class. One of the members is ranked #8 in the world.

Suffice to say, I don't shoot when I'm around these guys.

Glenn, what you are describing is sporting clays! That is what I shoot competitively!

I like to shoot a few boxes of shells to get warmed up for the hunting seasons. We don't do it competitively at a trap shooting range. Instead, we practice of a couple cases of pigeons in my uncle's corn fields.

Ya, I get confused between the two. It's not my sport.

I go to my father's public club, stand there and yell "pull" as clays are shot out from one position. 5 shots, then you move to another position. I think it's called "continental". I don't know whether that's "trap" or "sporting clays". To me, it's shooting the same type of clay pigeon flying through the air.

The private club I mentioned above - I just go to watch. It's way over my skillset. Again, I don't know what it's called, but it's pretty cool.

Ditto on Sporting Clays. I nick named it Golf with a Shotgun. I've shot 50 straight a few times. I like wobble trap too.

I shoot trap with my browning 9mm. I average about 16-18 hits when I go.
