Lucky Craft Sammy

I want to try walking the dog and I think the best lure to learn this with is the Lucky Craft Sammy.I want to know before buying what is the best size and color to get.I am going to use my abu garcia revo premier 2010 with my 7 ft M Mf Abu Garcia Vendetta rod to learn how to walk the dog.I will be fishing in a pond with 4lbs bass range.Any help would be great since I have never fish with this type of bait before since I don't do much topwater fishing.

I like Lucky Craft lures, they're a class act. All the same, it might be better to learn 'dog-walking' with a Heddon Spook

With the rod-tip held close to the water, it might feel a little like hammering a nail into the side of the boat.

The key though is a tad of line-slack, 'before' and 'after' each tug, then the dog-walk becomes a cakewalk.

The spook is a little harder to lean to walk. The 5" 7/8 oz. Super Spook is the one to get. I like Baby Bass, Bone, and Lake Fork Shad.

True, bone color is always a producer.

You might also want to check out the Duel Side Popper.

When Sammy, Gunfish and Super Spook do not produced. It's either the Zara Spook Jr(3 1/2", 1/2oz) or the Duel side popper that gets them to bite for me.

I think a 4.5" 3/4 oz walkers are the easiest to learn on, they're not as fast as a smaller one, so you can pick up the cadence fairly easy.

I thought it was "Zaragossa"? The 6500 series was a wooden lure. In 1939 they supposedy named it the Zara Spook (9000 series) because they were introduced as a plastic model.

The first walking plug was introduced in 1922, it was a hand-painted wooden plug called the 'Zaragossa Minnow'

In 1939 the original wooden minnow was replaced with a molded plastic version and Heddon renamed it “Zara Spook”

As it happened, the translucent plastic spook was more popular with anglers, who coined the phrase

“walking-the-dog”. Not much has changed since then.

If you tie directly to the lure use a loop knot. You'll get better action that way. I'm lazy so I use a snap.

I am thinking about changing these hooks with the #4 kvd elite triple grip hooks on my new spook jr.What do u think about that.Will it mess with the walk the dog action of the bait.I think those hooks will be better than the stock hooks.

Those hooks will be just fine. I tie direct, no loop knot, but that's my preference. Be careful of line size. #12-#17 mono dia is recommended. Too small of a dia will drag the nose down and making the spook jr. harder to walk. Too big will kill the action.

If you can put on a teaser taill, even better.

What knot do I need to use.I just went to the local baitshop and got me a lucky craft sammy 100 in ms american shad also for 17.99.It appears since the line tie on the sammy is down that I should be able to use the clinch knot or polamar.I think I may change those hooks aswell unless the stock treble are good enough.I should be able to stick those fish with the kvd elite treble hooks.I bought some eagle claw sz 4 oval split rings that I may use on these.If not I will put em on the red eye shads older ones that didn't come with oval rings.What teaser tail do u use?

Improved clinch or polamar will work just fine. As far as teaser tails, I make my own, but I'm pretty sure most on-line tackle stores sell them. I know Cabelas has them, I'm sure BPS will as well. Look at that Rebel Pop-R you caught your oinker on? That'll work!

Leave it stock, hooks are very good, and a teaser will kill the action.

Adding O-rings to the spook hooks is a good idea. I leave the Sammies stock though...

One thing that I didn't see mentioned is a shorter, fast action rod makes taking the dog for a walk much easier.

As for line I like braid with a loop knot or 15LB Big Game direct tie.

Not at all...Works just as well and adds profile to the bait.

I tied this one recently and tried it out. It has a bigger teaser than I normally tie and worked just as well as one with out.
