jeremyt Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 My oldest had a follow up appt for knee surgery and my wife wanted me to watch the little man today, so I thought I would take him to a local park. She drops him off about 3 and we head out. Get there and pay our $1 fee to fish. I let little man pay because it makes him feel like a big boy. Grab the rods and tackle bag and head down to pond 1. Tie on a 1/4 oz jig with a rage tail craw and begin flipping into the duck grass. We fished there for an hour without a nibble. Little man at this point has his minnow net catching turtles and frogs. He gets bored and say's "daddy, let's go to the other pond" I say ok, we pack up the truck and drive over to another pond. I switch over to a 1/8 oz spot remover and put on a june bug shakey head worm. I can see fish looking at but no takers. So I switch over to my spinning rod with 20 pound braid and 6 pound fluro leader. I see the fish looking at it, but again no takers. At that point I dig through my bag and see the thumpers in june bug. I think this is crazy because the light line, but try it anyway. I begin walking the bank and making casts. About 10 min later I pitch it out and look down and see a huge shadow swimming by. I reel up quick and pitch it about 10 ft in front of where I think he will be. It hits bottom I hop it one time and the line swims off. I had my drag set really loose because of the light tackle and the fish is pulling drag like crazy. It took all of about 2 min to get him in and I am not exaggerating I was playing him out because I was worried about breaking him off. I get him up and put him on the scale. 6 pounds 2 oz. beats my old record by a pound and an oz. I was stoked, this year has been great so far. Not so many fish, but they have been quality. I have caught this fish, 2 fives, a few fours and so forth. I love the rage tail thumper now and have confidence in that brand now that I have caught some quality fish. I think the best part is the fact that this is public waters and I am able to catch fish like this. I know the pic doesn't do it justice and some may not think its a 6 pound fish, but I swear it is. I am supposed to get some better pics from the park ranger who took a few pics for their wall. When I do I will post it. Quote
jeremyt Posted May 26, 2011 Author Posted May 26, 2011 Thanks guys, today was 95 with hazy skies. The water temps were 78 , I caught the fish at 4:27 pm . I wish my son would have been able to either hold the fish or snap a pick with my phone , but he is just too young. This fish was fat. The 5 # I caught a few weeks ago had a bigger mouth, but was no where near as thick I am still stoked. The pictures were crappy I was trying to weigh it get a pic and get it back in the water so it would survive. Then the ranger came around and asked for a pic of it. Quote

hookset on 3 Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 JT, I totally agree about those public ponds that get hammered.Imagine how many lures that big girl has seen swim by? Catching one that big from that pond,in front of your son, will be a lifelong memory! Oh,and by the way, thank you for your service to our great country, on this Memorial Day weekend. hookset on 3 Quote
