Fish them and find out, If it provides shade, it is probably good habitat and worth a shot.

I'm guessing you are concerned primarily with the noise factor. I've seen fishing shows, and tournament broadcasts where the pro is fishing metal docks in marinas as well as individual docks. I cannot speak from personal knowledge, but it occurs to me that if a pro fishes them, the positives outweigh the negatives.

My experience has shown me that wood or metal doesn't seem to matter. It's what is associated with the docks that does...overhead clearance, size/shape, shade, weeds, depth, etc. Fishing an open bullet sinker, etc could lead to some noise if you contact the dock but I will throw or skip tubes, floating worms, craws, etc and the plastic makes little sound on contact (if that's a negative to you).

Metal docks are well worth fishing, especially if that's all there is. If there were a metal and wood dock side by side, I'd probably fish the wood one first just because of the wooden legs.

99% of the docks I fish are metal. its structure and fish will hold to it. Around here there are very few wood docks.

I don't think it matters to the fish,how the shade happens, by the way, you say that is where you are fishing...catchin' anything?

I spend most of my time on the Fox Chain. You'll do better fishing the docks in the channels than on the lakes. The bluegills and crappies congregate around the metal boat lifts and the bass should be close. Personaly I'd recommend pitching to the metal seawalls or fallen timber. That's where I've gotten all my fish this year so far. Come summer time(if it ever shows up), you can work the docks with some type of weedless rigged plastics or fish the slop with frogs or weightless flukes or senkos dragged over the top.

The vast majority of the docks on Northern lakes are metal (at least on the lakes I fish).. Reason, the owners remove them before the lake freezes.

Like already mentioned, docks that produce more often have a better bottom, like rock or weeds, but that being said, in some cases any dock that has shade will hold fish.

Bottom line, if it's a dock, metal or wood, fish it!
