Flangler Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I picked up a 7fter the other day medium action and paired it with a Okuma Calera. I fished with it yesterday and love the set-up. Using it for plastics..worms, grubs, senkos..etc....Hurricane rods makes a great product for the price. Just wanted to share! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 23, 2011 Super User Posted May 23, 2011 I own 6 redbones, I like them. I could make some suggestions to their product line, but the rods themselves are very good. I wish the 7' spinning rods had just a little longer butt and their 10/20 mh spinning rods are rated for only an oz, their are times I want the same rod that goes 1/2 to 2 oz, I bought a Star rod for that usage. Super User BASSclary Posted May 23, 2011 Super User Posted May 23, 2011 Never heard of Hurricane rods, where do they sell them? Didn't see em; at TW or BPS Quote
Flangler Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Never heard of Hurricane rods, where do they sell them? Didn't see em; at TW or BPS I got mine at Sports Authority, however they do sell them at Dicks as well. I'm fairly impressed with them since they are soo cheap. Quote

Yea I have seen the Star rods...are they a little better quality then Hurricane rods? I did see that they were about 20 bucks more. Quote
johnD. Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Never heard of Hurricane rods, where do they sell them? Didn't see em; at TW or BPS Neither..Sports Authority or Dick's. Most freshwater guys have never heard of redbone rods , or star rods. I know quite a few people that fish redbone rods here inshore and offshore. Yea I have seen the Star rods...are they a little better quality then Hurricane rods? I did see that they were about 20 bucks more. Star rods use to be made in U.S.A. they sold out to Sea Striker and are made in China, there still decent rods from what I have heard , I have one Star rod its a 6' 6" MH spin made in U.S.A . I use it for jigging pompano and flounder, very nice rod. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 24, 2011 Super User Posted May 24, 2011 I have 3 Star rods, handicraft 7' 25lb class with an Avet mxj on it, love it. I have 2 stellar lites, 7' 20lb class and 25 lb, both spinning. Tips are stiff but I still get very good distance and the reel seats don't seem solid when I have larger fish on, did shim 1 of them up but need some time with it before I decide on success or failure. Don Conant Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 I just got home from two amazing weeks of inshore fishing at Port Charlotte Florida. I took my reels in my suitcase and bought rods down there because it was cheaper than flying my rods down there. The guys I was fishing with live there and I just bought rods like what they were using. They told me that I couldn’t beat a Redbone rod so I got a 7 ft medium and put my Penn 4000 reel on it with 30 lbs braid. I caught 30 inch Snook,Snapper,Trout ,Red fish,Mangrove Snapper. and even Big Red Grouper. That rod handled everything just fine. The guides are nice and the handle is nice . It casts great and I’m very pleased with the rod .Then I took it to the UPS store and shipped it home for $23.00 ,I’ll use it here in Ohio for bass and Walleye .For the money I think those rods are hard to beat.I don’t hesitate to recommend these rods. zell_pop1 Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 @Don Conant I live in Indiana but around 5 years ago my best friend and his wife moved to Punta Gorda so I've fished around Port Charlotte, love inshore fishing. But also next time your there check out Webb Lake. There are big Florida strain Largemouth in there. Yes there are gators but it is worth fishing. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 25, 2020 Super User Posted February 25, 2020 Another resurrected from the dead. I picked up a 7' ML Redbone a few years ago. Rod is rated 3/8-3/4 oz. Pretty sure it will sling less as it will bomb a 3/8 oz. squarebill. Don't think they make this model anymore. There was a second rod at the store (a mom-and-pop), but it was gone when I went back to buy that one as well. I really like the rod. It stays in Florida since we visit every year. SirSnookalot is the gentleman that recommended it to me. Personally feel it is worth a lot more than the $75 I paid for it. Kick myself for not doing what I wanted to do when I bought it....which was to buy both right then. I assume SirSnookalot is no longer with us since I haven't seen a post of his in several years. A shame. Very nice guy. Quote
mrpao Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 I have four of the hurricane calico jack rods. Excellent rods for the price. I use mine for saltwater and catfishing, but I'm sure they would work great for certain bass applications as well. They are fairly light and sensitive. Quote
