Flurocarbon Line Frustration

90% of my bass fishing is with softplastics, normally close range flipping or at least 15 yards or less. I love the sensitivity and sinking properties of flurocarbon. I've been spooling up with berkley vanish transition for a few years now, mostly 14 and 17 lb. I love the small diameter of this line compared to some other flurocarbon brands that are much thicker. I pretty much love this line from all angles but one. It never fails that a few times a day I will break off on a hookset. It drives me absolutely insane!!! I check my line and re-tie often to fix even the slightest nicks. Fishing plastics it's not easy/impssible to "back off" a little on a hookset. I want to feel confident I drove the hook home. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, tips, suggestions or recomendations of other flurocarbon brands that may hold up all day to solid hooksets.

You might try a brand of fluorocarbon with greater diameter.

Thin diameter line has many advantages but increasing the diameter lends to increased abrasion-resistance.

You'll notice that lines rated 'excellent' for abrasion-resistance are often lines with the heaviest diameter.

Given the same depth of fraying, the fatter the line diameter the lower the percentage loss in breaking strength.

Well, Thats not very odd at all. I tried that vanish once. I threw it away after a couple casts.

I do know with flouro you need to check the line. If it nicks, wears a spot, etc it will break easier then a copolymer.

As intimated above, "Vanish" was Berkley's initial entry in the fluorocarbon market.

If you prefer to stick with Berkley, go with Triilene 100% fluorocarbon instead.

The biggest issue with Vanish is the knot. In the booklet that comes with the line it specifically states,"Use a Trilene knot".

Vanish is terrible. I ran it for like 2-3 months, snapped off a bunch of times. Went to Yo-Zuri Hybrid and havent looked back.

Trash your Vanish. It is without a doubt the worst fluorocarbon line out there. I'd reccomend picking up some InvizX for spinning reels and AbrazX for casting reels

Another for berkley 100% I haven't been using FC that long but I have yet to have any issues with it. I've hung up in some nasty stuff fished and caught all day on the same improved clinch. I have noticed however, FC you need to get real wet with saliva when you pull it tight or you will mess the line up and cause a weak spot.

Your problem as already mentioned is Vanish. The line sucks outright. Change to another fc line. Just about any fc line is better than vanish. They don't call it Vanish because the line is invisible in the water. They call it that because that is exactly what the fish will do.

They call it Vanish because when you set the hook the fish just vanishes.

Try a better brand like seaguar, suffix, or trilene 100% flouro.

I've got 20 pound AbrazX on my plastics rig right now. Love it. Definitely has some memory. A little stretch and some KVD Line and Lure handle that.

there is a real trilene knot. you insert the line through the eyelet then push it back through leaving a 1 inch long oval on the other side of the hook. then twist the tag end around the main line 5 times, insert the tag end through the loop you made earlier and then put the tag end through the new circle you just made in the line. tighten by pulling the hook and tag end. when using fluoro make sure that the knot is tied right because it can slip eaily if tied wrong.

Vanish is a pure shiza line regardless of knot. I've happy with 100% Fluoro in that price range. I found that InvisX and AbrasX had too much stretch although decent lines.

I had terrible luck too. Now I run Yo-Zuri Hybrid with a Seagar Leader Flouro top shot (uni to uni). No more breakage! I'm doing this on a BC for Senkos.

I am another one that did not like the Vanish and it is the only line that I have ever stripped off and trashed after 1 trip. On the other hand the Berkley 100% Flouro has far exceeded my expectations.

Well I fish with sk ocho's and zoom flukes and I dont really do hooksets with these anymore.All I do is raise the rod tip and start reeling and the line pressure sets the hook for me.I find that I land more fish not setting the hook than setting it.I say I land about 99 percent of my fish doing this.Not to mention kvd does this with ocho's as well.I never fished with vanish but I did fish with berkley 100 percent and it pretty good.I have 8lbs invizx line on my spinning gear and it works pretty good.Just need to put kvd line and lure conditioner on the line.

I've had really good luck with Seaguar Red Label if you are on a budget. I've used it on spinning and casting gear and have been very happy with it's performance after a couple months of use.

I don' t recall to much promblems with Suffix. At least not now. I never tried any of the invisX or abrasX.

But it's time to get myself another bottle of line conditioner.

What size Fluoro are you putting on your spinning gear? 8 lbs Fluoro is the largest you should (assuming an average line diameter) use, so if you are using under that you will have far less problems. Larger than that and you need a baitcaster.

i threw away all the vanish i had on my reels for the same reasons but kept what was left for leader material, and for some reason I haven't had the same problems using it as a leader

I have tryed a lot of different brands and it is hard to beat the XPS brand from bass pro. I assume you are talking about a bait cast reel . I have not found a fc line for a spinning Every brand on spinning come off like a slinkey toy. Just use mono on spinning. Berkley xl triline is great and i get it with clear/blue flo.
