Just wondering how you guys feel about returning used rods and reels as "gifts"

I know a few people who will lets say, buy a rod from BPS. They'll fish it for a month, and decide, "Hey, You know I don't like this rod any more and I can get this other new one that looks alot better for the same price," So he/she returns the rod saying it's a "gift" from there aunt, uncle, whomever with a fake story just to get a different rod, even though they fully know they used it.

I was just wondering if this is something that you guys do commonly, or if you guys frown upon this.

sounds pretty sketchy to me, making someone else spend their hard earned money on a used product that is supposed to be new is pretty awful.

i wouldnt do it personally. This is the reason why people are starting to think that bass pro shops' quality is declining. Some people return used, maybe slightly damaged, scratched rod for a new rod, and bass pro shops dont inspect them carefully because they dont have the right tools at their store. Thus resulting in a 'decline' in their quality. And if too many people think they have bad quality goods, many people will stop buying things there, and it could possibly cause BPS to close for good. Although chances are it wont anytime soon. I still wouldnt do it if i were you!

I see no problem in using a rod whether it's a gift or buying it yourself and returning it after it's been used a few times, I've done it. No reason to lie, only have to say the rod didn't meet my expectation. If I liked the rod I'd keep it, if not get what you want. It's good customer service as well, if a store keeps me happy I'm coming back.

I wouldn't do it with unfaulty, perfectly working gear. If you buy something use it for an extended perod of time (more than 3 days IMHO) and don't like it thats on you, now if it has a flaw in any way, yes I can see taking it back, and I have returned stuff I have used myself, but have always been up front about it. I bought a Gander Mtn rod once, and used it for a month, the reel seat needed to be tightend every other cast, I finally had a enough, so I took it back. They exchanged it no problem.

I'd never do it because 1. It's dishonest, and 2. Like SirSnookalot said, there's just no reason to. Most reputable stores will refund or exchange a rod if you're not satisfied, so why lie?

As long as you meet the requirements of the return policy, it should not be a matter of "should I or should'nt I". Some stores put a limit on how many things can be returned in a given period of time. Cabelas has a good thing going here in Pa., it's called "The bargain cave". Returned as well as discontinued item's end up there at a discounted price.

Why the frowny faces? I've never done it, but alot of fisherman I know do it.

Although, on the same page as SirSnookalot If It doesn't meet my expectations in one week or less I will return it.

I have no qualms about fishing a rod for a day or two and returning it if it is not what I was looking for. That's not unreasonable, and it's in accordance with most stores return policies. I will not, however, fish a rod for a period of time then return if as a "gift" or some such thing. If I don't have the receipt and they can't find the record of my purchase via card or rewards card, I'm not going to worry about it.

That said, the only rod purchases I make anymore are those that are pretty specific. I've made only one that I regret in any way and that's my own darn fault and I'll eat it.

I've bought and returned many reels, rods and once even line (that was used only one trip, P-Line CXX or something like that). I'm straight forward with them, always bring the receipt and return it in a timely manner if it doesn't suit me. I have also returned new, unused items months after purchase.

If something takes a bit longer to determine proper fit in my arsenal and it doesn't make the cut, it goes on a forum sale page.

I once kept a rod for a few months before returning it. I had only used it two or three times, and it just felt "dead". I returned it, in like new condition, along with all of the tags and paperwork that came with the rod when it was purchased. As soon as I explained my problem with it, they cheerfully refunded my money and I walked out with a different rod.

Be honest and they'll be willing to work with you.

If after using a piece of equipment a time or two it doesn't meet expectations, then returning it is a reasonable thing to do IMO. It is not reasonable or honest to use something repeatedly and return it just to try something else. I'm told there are some who will buy clothes for a special occasion knowing they will return them after the event. Those of us who try to play by the rules are the ones who ultimately pay for this kind of behavior.

IMO it's the wrong way to go.....Sell it here or on Ebay.Then go buy something else.

I wonder how many people brought something from a store only to have it break on them for earlier misuse from the guy who brought it back.If you going to get something make dang well sure you want it before buying it. You know how many rods and reels I passed up I could have brought but probably would have been unhappy with it a week or two later? Probably a few.It takes me awhile to make a decision on a good rod and reel. I'm not rich so I make my decision count.

Now if something wrong with it from the first get go and you return it,I see no problem with returning it.When I buy something I plan on keeping it for good till it breaks.

Now if it was actually a gift then I expect to see tags and wrapped handles in plastic like it just came off the shelf untouched and not dirty.If I had a tackle store I doubt too many people would like me.

If you ( a person) finds a rod unsatisfactory after one or two tries and you've treated the rod well, I don't see any issue in returning it. But don't lie and say it was never used or that it was a gift. Sometimes you just have to "eat" a bad purchase rather than making someone else eat it.

These huge chain stores of.any kind pay people millions of dollars to figure how to squeeze every penny they can out of middle class America. I know many stores that will knowingly resell a broken returned item. I have no respect for large retailers and I'm not going to worry about returning my $200 rod or reel when there CEO makes that in 5 minutes sitting on his fat useless ***

As long as I comply with policies any store have put into place to make doing business with them more attractive I'm doing nothing wrong. I buy want I what, when I want it,or buy nothing if I choose. It's hard to understand how a store is squeezing me, unless I was out of control in the first place, which I'm not. It's easy to blame the lack of will power and common sense on some fictitious demon some called a "bait monkey".

What a CEO earns in 5 minutes is between him/her, and the board of directors, not me, I always have the option of shopping elsewhere.
