Bladesmith, Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I recently got 2 used Silver Max reels at an auction. They need to be cleaned and lubed. I can't figure out how to get the thing apart. I removed all the visible screws, handle and drag star, but the side plate holding the gears is still firmly attached. It appears to be attached around the flipping switch but there is no visible way it can be attached. I have owned and cleaned my own Ambassadeur reels for years and never had a problem like this. Haven't been able to find schematic on internet so any help is appreciated. Thank You Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted May 22, 2011 Super User Posted May 22, 2011 You need to remove the side plate OPPOSITE of the handle side first. Unscrew the knurled screw, then turn the plate counter clockwise about 1/4 turn and lift off. Remove the spool and there's likely another Phillips screw that was behind the spool that needs to be removed in order to get the gear side plate off. Quote

Worked easy. I was about ready to open it with a cold chisel, it's much easier this way (does less damage to the reel, too). Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 You really should have a schematic in front of you before you attempt reel disassembly. Keep in mind that they don't necessarily show disassembly/reassembly order. Quote
