Super User deep Posted May 22, 2011 Super User Posted May 22, 2011 I'm having trouble with the spool tension knob on my Citica. I tightened the knob down as far as it would go, and even then a 5/8 oz lure would fall down pretty fast. I don't really know what other info to give, except that I took out the knob, cleaned the spring and the washer with an ear bud and put everything back, but that didn't change anything. I don't even recall if this has always been like this with this reel. Can other Citica owners chime in? Thanks. Quote
BassThumb Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I had this happen in a Curado D when the little spool tension spacer pad inside the tension knob was falling over instead of remaining flat on the bottom of the knob. When I would tighten the knob, it was just squashing the pad and not actually putting pressure on the spool. Sometimes the pad doesn't stay put if it has just been cleaned and dried. Is the pad damaged/curled? Quote

Super User deep Posted May 22, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 22, 2011 Bassthumb, I don't think so. This is how it looks. It's about a year old, and seen pretty good use I would say. EDIT: I just tightened down the knob as far as it would go, and the spool does not move horizontally at all.. Does that mean anything? EDIT2: I also found the washer to be quite wet. So I took out the knob, and am air-drying the inside of the knob and the spring.. Quote
BassThumb Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Nope, that's not it then. The grease is keeping the pad in place. Quote
Super User deep Posted May 22, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 22, 2011 Nope, that's not it then. The grease is keeping the pad in place. It's not grease. The liquid (and there was quite a lot of it before I took the photo) had a watery consistency. Maybe the reel was like this when I bought it. I always set the spool tension pretty loose, and compensate with my thumb. I just noticed it a few days ago, and thought it was weird.. Quote
Juggernoob Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Clean the shim in the knob, also, I find that sometimes the spring gets over compressed, take the spring out and slightly pull on it rrom each end so it expands a little. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted May 23, 2011 Super User Posted May 23, 2011 If that CC shim was in a CI reel we received for service, it and the shim from palming plate would/should be replaced automatically. The dimple in it is the cause for a lack of CC adjustment. In the Curado there is a rubber backer that sits under that shim so it will not lose adjustment. The fix: If you have another shim replace the dimpled one, if you don't have another clean the one you have flip it over and re-oil (one drop). You should have adjustment them, but you do need to have a spare shim for both the CC Cap and Palming plate. Good Luck & Tight Lines ! Quote

Couple of quick questions, how do I access the washer on the palming side? And is there a way I can upgrade the cast control knob, or just get a "rubber" backer like the one you speak of? Quote

And is there a way I can upgrade the cast control knob, or just get a "rubber" backer like the one you speak of? Access the palming plate shim by turning and unscrewing the turn key, remove the side plate..CAREFULLY remove the bearing retainer clip, remove the bearing, the shim (BNT0664) will be sitting directly under the bearing pack. For the parts in the Cast Control Cap: BNT1696 cast control spacer BNT2224 spool tension spacer (shim) Never work on a reel without the schematic in front of you!!! Good Luck & Tight Lines!! Quote

Well, for what I see in the pic you really tightened it all the way down, the shim is dimpled, now it needs to be replaced. Quote
Super User deep Posted May 25, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 25, 2011 Yeah, I guess I found there wasn't enough spool tension, and I must have kept tightening it down until that happened. I took out the shim, and lo and behold, there was a rubber washer sitting beneath it. I turned both over, put everything back, and now the reel works perfectly. I didn't do anything on the palming side though. Quote

The way you have been adjusting cast control is the cause and flipping the shim will only be a temp fix, cause it will try to dimple on that side also. Call Shimano and get a couple of extra shims for when it falls out of adjustment again.. Good Luck & Tight Lines! Quote
