zenyoungkoh Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Hi people, today i caught 4 bass and 1 bluegill... nbd. but before i decided to go home, i decided to have one last cast of my white spinnerbait. i reeled the spinner in fairly quick and there was this 3 pounder following it all the way from about 10 feet! problem is it didnt strike it, just followed it and hang around the bank. I cast it out several times again at different speeds and retrieve and half of the time, the fish just chases my spinnerbait and never actually hit it. Its not gaurding its nest or anything. btw the pond is 1-3 feet deep, and i caught another bass about 7 minutes ago on the same spinnerbait with a fairly quick retrieve. Can someone thats good with spinnerbaits tell me how to get the fish to strike? Little guy tried to jump when i was taking a picture lol Quote
FL_Sharpshooter Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Nice fish. Sounds like you had a fun time. To get a strike from a bass on a spinnerbait, I reel it quickly just a few inches under the surface, and kind of hop it along. They just can't stand that. Quote
hookingem Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Nice fish! please don't put the fish in the dirt to take pictures of them. That ruins their slime coat, and can often times lead to death. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 23, 2011 Global Moderator Posted May 23, 2011 Try a different color or blade combo. Sounds like the fish likes the bait but something just isn't quite doing it for him. Quote
evrgladesbasser Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Several things come to mind.. a change in retrieve speed, lure size, lure color, blade color or design. could be any, all, or none of the above. Unfortunately the only way to find out is to experiment. Changing the blades (willow to colorado, colo to tandem, etc) usually does the trick for me Quote
Scorcher214 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I would try either changing to a different color spinnerbait or a weightless white super fluke. Quote
Hound_dog Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Another option you can try is to snap the rod tip a few times during the retrive. This will cause the spinnerbait to stop for a moment which will cause the skirt to flair out. As evrgladebasser mentioned changing the blade combination can help out with this also. Not just the type of blade but also the size of the blade. Quote
