NEED HELP GETTING THESE RATTLES OUT OF CRANK BAITS

Hey Fellas; Can someone give me a step by step drilling into crank baits and removing the ball bearings. I want to silence most of my cranks, and 2 8a's later decided to ask for help .Cracked both with the drill ?

With patience and saliva an elephant can screw an ant Muddy.

You are drilling too fast.

You are drilling with a large diameter bit.

Start with a small drill bit and go larger as needed, drill slow, don 't apply to much pressure or --- > Cracked both with the drill.

Thanks Raul: When I get back to it I think you have the idea. I have the drill on high speed, I have a small bit but i thought the faster I go the righter I would go : ;D

Muddy, I wouldnt try to remove them at first.

Give this a try. Drill a hole with the smallest bit you can find. Take some superglue and drop it down the hole, glueing the ball bearing in place.

This will keep your bait the same weight and it will also silence it. The smaller hole will also be easier to plug up when you want to throw the bait again.

What if he wants to convert what he has and doesn't have the coin to buy new?

Superglue is a great idea; also with a slightly bigger hole you can squirt/squeeze in silicon as well; work it in like putty.

Also, if you have a friend with a drill press, that will help substantially.

but what, when the glue dries, if the rattle is a bit off center from the centerline of the bait or too far forward or too far back.  This would make the bait run off track, wouldn't it?  I have wanted to silence some of my crankbaits but was afraid of getting them off balance.  Just a thought...

I thought the same thing when I read that but then I thought 'just keep the bait level til it dries.

I'm all for tinkering but I will advise you to try it on one or two, then fish them to make sure that they're going to workout the way you want. It would really suck if you drilled and filled a bunch of baits only to discover that they don't work right anymore.

If you decide to use the drill-n-glue method, make sure you set the bait at the angle it dives at. If you glue the bait while it is sitting level then the bearings or rattles will be fixed at a different position than when it is diving. Another bit of info, by the time you add glue and epoxy to the bait, the bait will be heavier therefor possibly altering the depth and action. All of this comes from experience of trying the same thing with rattle traps.

Sounds easier to me, plus you'll make the ol' bait monkey happy. ;D

Who knows though, maybe they'll run better after filled with glue? I agree with bass wrangler569, try one or two of 'em. Let us know how it goes!

Muddy, are the rattles really a problem or are they keeping some of the fish from biting, or did you just want to try something different? I like the glue idea best.

I will post today's trip latter. I was thinking sometimes I throw DT's with no rattles and I hook up better than someone I am fishing with using rattles

THROW THIS WHOLE IDEA OUT: Today's trip 4 nice fish 2 on a Mann's minus-1 Baby Bass Color and 2 on a OLD Original Big O in Bluegill

that's why i buy the ''switchback'' Bomber lures by tim horton. im gonna also be getting some Luckycraft silent cranks , i hate that most all cranks have rattles in them >
