I am planning on getting a new rod and reel for plastics. I am thinking about a rod in between the 6'6" and 7' range probably a medium, but would be open to a MH. I am interested in the Fenwick HMG and was wondering how that compres to other rods in its price range. I don't want to spend more than $120 on the rod. As far as reels go I was thinking about a Revo S. I don't want to spend more than $130 on the reel, and hopefully keep the entire combo under $250.

I have a few Revo S's as well as a few Shimano Citica E's and older D's. The Revo S, and the Citica E both sell for about the same, in hind sight I wish I would have bought more Citica's, they are better, no contest.

The kind of cover your going to fish should dictate the rod power you choose. Open water and light to moderate cover a M power wil be fine. Any kind of heavy cover, go with a MH or even a H power. Personaly I would go with the MH, it will be more versitile, you can fish just about any kind of cover with it, except for maybe the very thick of the thickest weed mats.

As for length, I prefer 7' (or longer) for most all my plastic and jig fishing, but I do like a shorter 6'8" or 6'6" rod for pitching in tight spots, like around docks, or in narrow creeks around laydowns/ thick brush etc...

I use St Croix, and Kistler rods, but used to use Fenwicks, in fact my 7'6" H power flipping rod is still a Fenwick HMX, I just have not found one from Croix or Kistler I have liked. I never had a problem with any Fenwick I owned (Eagle GT's, HMX's, HMG's, and Technas AV's) The HMG's are very close to St Croix Avids, but I have not used any of the newer ones, mine were the last generation.

If I were you I'd look at the bucoo series from falcon. I'm not sure if you'd like a mh for plastics but their 7' heavy is on the lighter side of heavy. This is a super sensitive rod and extremely light that is relatively affordable considering the components used. I think the bucoo with microguides can be had for around $120. as for reels, I'd go with a citica or curado. the curado can be found on line for around $140. I absolutely love this combo for smaller plastics.

I have done some more looking around, found a 7.1 curado on ebay for $140, right now I am thinking of putting a curado on a compre. Also saw an Abu Garcia SX for a reasonable price, how do those two reels compare. As for a rod to put the SX on I am leaning toward the HMG, I have heard good things about the Veritas but wonder if it is just another flashy split grip, made to sell on looks. Any more info?

Specifically for plastics i'd spend more on the rod than the reel. In that price range I'd look for a used Loomis rod and pair it with a BPS Pro Qualifier. However you'll like the Curado if you choose to go that route, I have several and like them all.

I have cumaras, crucials, several falcon caras which i love, a couple of mossybacks and for the bottom line the bucoo is hard to beat for an all around worm rod. as for the revo sx, its a good little reel. feels great out of the box and then within a few months gets that typical abu gear whine. I think the curado handles the lighter stuff a little better too. I'm also not a huge fan of mag. cast control either. I know i sound like a shimano fanboy and I guess I am. it's just that I haven't found anything that the curado does poorly or even mediocre.

I fish plastics with a Citica 200E on a BPS Carbonlite 7'MH, with BPS 14lb floro. It is a great set up. I would not go with anything other than a MH rod for plastics.

Curado on the Compre will be more than enough..You might think that the MH is too much.Check them out in person if possible.

i agree with this all the way. M/F makes a great plastics rod. it also serves as a lipless rod and a spinnerbait rod.
