Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 18, 2011 Super User Posted May 18, 2011 Im getting a new reel after work tommorow or the next day. Currently im hung up between a Calcutta and a Curado. Everyone speaks highly of the Curado, but they feel kinda cheap to me. Anybody have any insight as far as durability and what not with the Curado's? I dont want to spend that kind of money and have the reel shatter if it is accidently dropped. Quote
Super User skunked_again Posted May 18, 2011 Super User Posted May 18, 2011 Curado is good gear. if they were cheap word would have been out long agao. Quote
hookingem Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Curado's are NOT cheaply made reels. They are IMO the best reel under 200$, and heck they are readily available for under 140$! Their wouldn't be this many people backing a "cheap" reel. Quote
daiwa junkie Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 the curado is like the corolla of the shimano lineup, the chronarch is the camry and so on. The more you pay , the better the reel gets. I loved my curado until i bought a zillion type r Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Nothing wrong with a Toyota Camry! I see a lot of car companies that mimic that car. AJ, you know they are the best reel for under $179 Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 20, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 20, 2011 Bought a curado yesterday morning. Stupid thing broke yesterday evening. The dang cast button broke on it. However I dare say the reel itself seemed very sturdy. I thought it was going to be cheap plastic. I just have no luck with shimano reels. I might try another one in a month or so. Im not sure if im completely ready to give up on them yet. Quote

Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 20, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 20, 2011 Why wait a month , exchange it for another one and see if you have better luck. I already exchanged it for another Smoke reel. However next pay check I believe Im going to give them one last try. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 While, IMO, the E series Curado does feel less substantial in hand than some of it's predesessors, they are a well built quality reel. Any manufacturer can have a bad one here or there and Shimano's customer service is pretty good. As far as the Curado vs Calcutta question goes, that's more of a matter of features and application than quality. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted May 20, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 20, 2011 The intended application for the new reel is going to be hard swimbaits, 1 1/2 - 3oz. jigs. The Smoke reel I traded the broken reel for wont handle this task, least not in my opinion. The reel is going on my new Shimano Trevala which is rated at 40-60# and max lure weight of 3 3/4oz. The rod is a 6'3" medium light. I thought it would be nice to match the shimano rod with a shimano reel. This combo will be used in both fresh and saltwater. As I said before Ive had three shimano reels now, two of which broke within a week. The third of which my brother messed up after my having it for 15 years. So I figure Ill give them a final try and just blame the recent curado to bad luck. Quote
carrollton-fisher Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 I've got 2 calcutta's and absolutely love them. i use them both for bass and saltwater fishing and couldn't be happier. Tough as hell and DVT can really make them smooth, tough, and bulletproof for you. Quote
BrASSmonkey Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 If you are throwing those heavy swimbaits and jigs, i would probably go for a Calcutta unless you are looking at the Curado 300e... Quote
baluga Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 Calcutta CTE50GT or CTE100GT if you can't find the size 50. Quote
daiwa junkie Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 meant to say Nothing wrong with a Toyota Corolla your right,, nothing wrong with the corolla at all, the curado is a great reel , wasnt implying they were not good,,i own a couple , and will most likely own a couple more one day Quote
Super User Micro Posted May 22, 2011 Super User Posted May 22, 2011 I have several Curado 200E7s. They are perfectly adequate for bass fishing. They have graphite side plates, but this isn't any problem. The drag is entirely sufficient. They cast supremely well. And they are comfortable to palm and the handles are the most comfortable on the market, IMO. I have a Calcutta 200GTB. This is a reel built to last a lifetime. It is all metal. No graphite in this reel. It's heavy. But you pay the price in weight, since it's very heavy. But with the shallow ported spoool, it will cast baits as well as the Curado. I have no problems throwing 1/4oz baits, and would not hesitate to throw bigger hard swimbaits with it. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted May 22, 2011 Super User Posted May 22, 2011 Wait, is someone trying to say shimano is like toyota but recalls 14 million reels in a year? Quote
