Looking To Put Together A Crankin' Setup...thoughts?

Hey Fellas -

I'm looking to put together a crankin's rod/reel setup. I'm usually fishing Southwestern MI and Northeast IL. Any ideas on rod, reel? I've heard Flouro is better, I flip and pitch plastics with 40 lb braid on a MH Abu Garcia Vendetta. I've noticed early this year that it doesn't have much forgiveness with cranks. It pretty much pulls it straight back to the boat with little movement.

I had my eye on the KVD Crankin Rod, mainly for the price.

Any input is appreciated.

I use a Shimano Compre 7' M crankin stick and a Shimano Curado 201dpv 5.1:1 ratio reel spooled with 12lb yo-zuri hybrid. Works amazing for me. Cranks are my go to bait so that rod gets LOTS of use.

I've got 2 crankbait setups right now and about to add a third. First is a 7'0 MH MF crucial with curado 200DPV, the 2nd is a 6'6 MM crucial with a chronarch 50mg. The MH is good for pretty much any crankbait from small square bills to DD22's. The M is excellent for throwing small cranks like bandit 200-300. My next setup is going to be a Chronarch 200 D5 and a MH 7'11 cumara for deep diving cranks. Also, I had been using yo-zuri hybrid 10# for my cranking which is great, but this yr I'm gonna try flouro to get a little more depth out of them.

I have 3 cranking setups right now and they are a Quantum Kinetic PT with a Kistler Mag TS 7' M/MF, a Cabelas Prodigy with a Cabelas Prodigy 7' MH/MF rod as my casting setups. I also have a spinning setup that I use for cranking which is a Quantum Catalyst PTi-B20 with a Cabelas Prodigy 7' M/F rod spooled with either 6# Cabelas Flouro or 30# Power Pro braid.

Any of the KVD Crankin rods would be a good choice also. I handled them in BPS and they are super light with MF action.

You will get some varying opinions when it comes to combos for cranking. Some are graphite die-hards and some glass. The KVD series is a composite rod. The fact you are eyeing a softer action rod tells me a glass rod may be an option. Lamiglas has four great CB rods, three glass and one composite. Check their website. The SR705R would be my first choice. A good quality 5 something to 1 reel is the way to go. I like the Revo Winch. You have several options.

I have three cranking setups

6'10"MH carrot stix gold/daiwa sol for shallow cranks

7'MH Lucky Craft/ shimano curado e5 for mid-deep

7'10" 7'10"M carrot stix gold/daiwa sol fishes everything well from baby 1 minus to fat free shads

Being graphite, the carrot stix are ver sensitive but no longer available. I'd give the Lucky Craft rods a look. They are $150 at Tackle Warehouse.

7' MHM Powell 703CB which is great for DD22 and also topwater baits such as chug bugs.

my crankin setup is my 7' M mod action carbonlite combo. nice setup 6:4:1 ratio, works well for me. i've got a brother in law who uses an ugly stick for crankin and does well enough

for the price, i like my 7'6" mh BPS crankin stick with a 5.2:1 pro qualifier. although it is a little on the heavy side, it handles the bigger baits i throw from time to time.

for smaller baits and night fishing i have a st. croix legend tournament walleye "deep cranker" (7' MH/M) spinning rod with a pflueger arbor. its great for night fishing, more forgiving (less backlashes) and can throw some pretty big baits, as well as small baits very well.
