Andy C Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Let me say-these things flat out catch fish. What sizes are you guys throwing? What trailers are you using? For fish head spins I have been using flukes and some hollow body swimbaits. Most fish have been caught by pendulum fishing them. I will make a short pitch parallel to bluff banks or deep points, engage the reel and wait for the line to jump. I used to do this with a lil george, but the fish head spin seems to select for larger fish. I have gotten a few slow rolling them over flats. Any patterns out there that I missed? Scroungers--I don't think there is a trailer that wouldn't work. I just started fishing them and I can already tell they will be a staple in my box for a long time. This is an incredibly versatile lure. Quote
Nibbles Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Is there really that big of a difference between a fish head spin and a spinnerbait other than difference in bulkiness of profile and blade size? I feel like you should be able to do about as well by slow rolling a spinnerbait. Scrounger heads are very versatile, but you have to be careful to make sure they run true to avoid massive line twist. Sometimes you get a few duds that don't wobble side to side in the water, but oscillate in a complete 360 degree circle - that basically screws up your line unless you have a swivel tied on. I really like to tip mine with SK Caffeine Shads. The 5" ones are just long enough so that when you fish them on the scrounger, their bulbous tails whip back and forth in a very noticeable way. Quote
chromedog Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Big difference between a spinner bait and a fish head spin. On a fish head spin you can throw on a hollow body swim bait and have the movement of the tail as well as the small flash from the blade. More subtle presentation. On the scrounger head.....I will never NOT have one tied on. They are so versatile and flat out catch fish. Try them with a 3.5 lake fork magic shad. Just hold on. But I know what you are talking about with the heads spinning......but it is an easy fix. The bill has just gotten off center a little bit. Just slide it back even again. A drop of glue if need be.
