Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 16, 2011 Super User Posted May 16, 2011 Went offshore this morning and the prospects didn't look good, flat seas and west wind. Threw the sabiki and put a couple dozen greenies into the livewell and off we went. Prediction held true was a slow day, couple of king cuttoffs and some bonita. Caught a few hefty fish this week and my back was sore so I decided to fish conventional with mono. A good part of the morning was taken up getting this Blacktip in. Avet mxj, 25lb Star handicraft rod, 20# P-line florclear( some strong stuff) Got him along side and cut the line, we figure 6-7' just short of 200# Quote

You saltwater guys have a language of their own, either that or I am a moron. Probably the ladder. Either way what I picked up from that was it was windy and you caught a shark. Cool. Quote

Cool. black tip = species of shark sabiki = special rig to catch baitfish greenies = type of baitfish king cutoffs and bonita = species of fish avet mxj = model of reel Nice shark btw!! Must been a long fight with a 20lb+ line! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 16, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 16, 2011 West wind in the Atlantic means the wind are blowing from the shore creating or I should say not creating waves (flat sea), wind was pretty calm, which is not good. Zenyoungkoh descriptions are perfect except kingcutoffs. Kings pertain to kingfish and a cutoff is when the king bites thru your leader and your hook is gone, which may happen more than actually hooking them, but that's kingfishing. Wire leaders are taboo, kings very seldom strike with wire. Quote

Thats just half the fun though.... Quote
GLADES Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 You caught some hefty fish earlier in the week so you decided to take it easy and catch 200# sharks. Quote

After I caught my Amberjack couple of weeks ago I did decide to take it easy and fish for snook, go figure I catch a nice tarpon the next day. Went offshore this past Monday ( all rested up) and it was a bad west wind, 1 medium sized bonita until the shark hit, wasn't the plan I don't like shark fishing. Since then I haven't had a strike PERIOD ! (one 6" bass for my first bass outing in a month)........the pendulum swings both ways. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 23, 2011 Super User Posted May 23, 2011 Nice Going! You fought a blacktip shark, so the next question naturally follows...Did she jump? Roger Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 24, 2011 Author Super User Posted May 24, 2011 No the black tip did not jump, was not really a tough fight as compared to some lemon and spinner sharks I have caught even though they were a bit smaller. Time consuming and backbreaking .....yes. Countless number of other fish I would prefer catching, smaller fish, harder fights with shorter duration, kings, cobia, amberjack , sailfish, and on spinning gear. Quote

When I lived in Edgewater, FL blacktip sharks would build-up along the beach every July (Ponce Inlet and a mile south). They were shallow and some of them made spinning leaps like the spinner shark (nothing compared to the Makos in Jersey). But just like you said, we're getting too old for this Roger Quote
