Pingi15Whiteboard Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 i'll try to keep this short, 3 years ago i joined a golf forum, and now i know everything there is to possibly know about golf equipment, seriously, it's sickening, unfortunately, i'm starting from scratch when it comes to fishing, i don't know much at all, but that's why i'm here i've been fishing off an on my whole life, just with friend and my dad and such, never seriously, but this year for some reason i've developed a fishing bug, and other than golf it's all i want to do, i've gone 5 times already this year anyway, i've been using night crawlers, and i've caught 785 sunfish and 2 bass, but today i saw some dude catch a 5 pound bass, and i was pumped, and i said "that's what i want", so i don't mind if i don't catch anything as long as there's the chance of catching a nice bass, so now i'm researching different kinds of baits and lures and how to use them, i don't even know what a spinnerbait or a crankbait is or when or not to use a bobber lol, but i'll continue to due some research, anyway thanks for reading -brad Quote

Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 16, 2011 Super User Posted May 16, 2011 Hey Ping, glad to have yoiu aboard. What part of MA you from? Quote
Pingi15Whiteboard Posted May 16, 2011 Author Posted May 16, 2011 medway, you?, my main focus right now is learning all the different bait types and exactly how to use them so atleast i know i have a chance at catching a bass, instead of jest hoping, i'm thinking of trying soft plastics first, texas jig?, can you guys recommend a soft plastic, maybe a lizard or a worm, or whatever might be a good one to try, right now all i have is powerbait from walmart, but i can spend a little more money from bass pro shops on a higher quality one if the walmart ones are considered lackluster Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 16, 2011 Super User Posted May 16, 2011 I'm from the Canton area. You can't go wrong starting out on a t-rigged worm and/or grub, IMHO. Maybe add a topwater popper to add some excitement. Rebel Pop-R was my first bass catch many years ago. Maybe a spinnerbiat. T-rigged worms are weedless and will make the day much more enjoyable Popper - well once you get one on a popper, you'll totally understand Spinnerbait - somewhat weedless and you can start out with a constant retireve and still get results. It is very versatile and eventually you'll find many different retrieves and techniques using them. Keep it simple and start out with maybe 3 types of lures that will get you thru the water column, learn whatever you can from them before you move on to something else. JMHO...Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions. Quote
Pingi15Whiteboard Posted May 16, 2011 Author Posted May 16, 2011 is the idea with the t-rigged worm to cast it out and let it sink to the bottom and slowely reel it in as if to crawl along the bottom, is there a decent worm brand or type to look for, and with the popper, i just watched a youtube video, you cast it out and it floats on the surface, then you just pull to make it pop, do you feel it's worth getting the scented spray for the worms or are they good enough on there own and when do you think plastic worms lose there luster because most of the stuff in my tackle box is old Quote

NBR Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Brad, Welcome, I think you will find this a friendly and informative board. Soft plastics are a good start but some time the bass take them very subtlely and hits are hard to detect. If I were you I'd also get a spinner bait or two. 1/2 ounce, silver Indiana blades white or yellow skirts. Always use a trailer hook. I prefer "Strike Kings but that is just a personal thing, A surface bait such as an original Rapala which can also be cranked down as a shallow runner or a Heddon Spook. When choosing colors I like to think about the forage base and keep the colors in that area. Generally darker but some silvery like bait fish. BPS is a good source but so is Northern Bass Supply in Kingston, NH. NBS would probably be more help in making selection since every one I have talked to is at least a fanatical bass fisherman and most are fanatical. They have a net site. Re scents, I don't use them very often but others do. I caught mt first bass in about 1946. I am not the best bass fisherman around but not many are more seasoned. Feel free to PM me if you want. Pingi15Whiteboard Posted May 21, 2011 Author Posted May 21, 2011 thanks for all the replies and advice, i went this morning for 4 hours, didn't have any luck but it was fun trying the new methods, i picked up a rebel pop-r from walmart and that was awesome, had a few hits on it, also used a texas rigged soft plastic worm for a while, then i tried a spinner bait for a while, wasn't totally sure how to use it, i basically just reeled it in slowly to avoid it sinking to the bottom, it was fun and i'm gonna keep trying, i enjoyed it more than catching 15 sunfish with real worms even though i didn't catch anything Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 22, 2011 Super User Posted May 22, 2011 Sounds like you were on them though. It'll come to you. Check our PM's Quote

Pingi15Whiteboard Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 what's up guys, quick update, caught my first 5 pounder a couple weekends ago, i walked out into the lake about waist deep and was casting it as far as i could, and WHAM, i knew it was huge cause of how heavy it was and i could barely reel it in, sweet, i used a t-rigged strike king soft plastic worm with a weight anyway, i'm thinkin about buying a 2person inflatable boat, so far i've only checked walmart and basspro online, the one that looks nice is a sevylor fish hunter, it's green and yellow, any opinions on a good inflatable boat?
