JohnnyBigger Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I have always been a power fisherman. I love flipping and pitching more than anything but over the last few months I ave been breaking of ALOT of fish during my hookset. My question is has anybody had this problem and any tips on how to lower my number of breaks. FYI I typically use 15-25lbs florocarbon or 55-75 lbs Power Pro Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted May 15, 2011 Super User Posted May 15, 2011 They only time I have ever had that problem with heavy line and big rods, was when the top guide on my flipping stick got a nick in the insert. Would weaken the line in random places, where it would break on hooksets. Quote
JohnnyBigger Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 Anywhere from 5-15" above the hook. I thought the same thing but Im breaking off on both my flippin rods. Quote
Dave T. Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Are you sure you're not breaking off at the knot? If you are actually breaking 25lb floro, or 55lb braid up the line a foot or so, and doing so frequently... something is wrong? Quote

joshholmes Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 what type of guides are on your rods? a lot of the times ceramic guides get chipped very easily and cut into your line. also, how often do you change line? i change mono once every 2-4 weeks, fluoro once every month and braid once a year Quote

I don't know what to tell you man. Maybe some bad line, or your just on an unlucky streak and getting into some places that is fraying the line. I would get fresh line, and check everything on both rods... guides, and even the level wind tunnel on the reels. Next time you go, check the line every couple of casts and see if you see/feel anything suspicious. Quote
bigbassdave Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I don't know how you could be breaking 65lb braid without breaking off your rod tip. Could the knot be slipping? I use a double-palomar knot(two wraps through the eye) to insure against the knot slipping. If you're breaking off 25lb flouro--then you need to think about: (1) using a different type of knot(many posts on this subject) (2)using a rod with a bit more give to it; (3) loosening your drag slightly so it will slip a bit on hookset; (4) not setting the hook so hard. It's all a tradeoff. I'm a big guy and I set the hook much harder than necessary for braid. My problem was bending hooks... but heavier hooks mean bigger, torn holes in the bass' mouth---opportunity to lose a big one. Backing off the drag slightly is fine in some situations but I often fish thick timber--that's an undesired handicap. I do use heavy rods with a bit more tip than I would with mono. I'm trying to teach myself to use a more controlled hookset... Start with the knot....good luck! Quote

Im a bigger guy with a pretty strong hookset and I fished a breast cancer tourney and I started using trokar hooks and it made me lightened my hookset and I didnt break any off so im hoping that fixed my prob but my confidence in in the tank when a fish bites. Thanks for everybodys help!!! Quote
