lynyrdsky1 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Hey everyone, I know some of you remember me complaining about my hand about a month ago well.... it actually ended up being something. I was at football practice when I guess I did something to the left side of my left hand that caused it to swell like a balloon. Went to the doctor and found out that i split the tendent between my small finger and ring finger. He wanted to put a cast on me but I had to beg him not to because I have a tournament this weekend. Is there anything that I can do to keep it stabalize while I'm in the tournament? I tried taping it but it doesn't really help much.
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 12, 2011 Super User Posted May 12, 2011 You want it stabilized so that it can heal properly? Let the doc put it in a ^%#@#*&^(&%^%# cast, you numbskull. 1
Super User Grey Wolf Posted May 12, 2011 Super User Posted May 12, 2011 Learn to make the correct adult decision and listen to your doctor.

He is but not till Monday after the Tournament which is this weekend. If he puts me in a cast now,I would be unable to fish at all.
jeremyt Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 He is but not till Monday after the Tournament which is this weekend. If he puts me in a cast now,I would be unable to fish at all. I understand being young and not thinking of the future. You are willing to risk your future health for one tournament. You need to focus on the bigger picture. You are asking for a way to stabilize your hand so you can fish more comfortably. Your body is trying to tell you something with that pain. If you fish and cause yourself further damage then you will have no one else to blame but yourself. You need to listen to the doctor, put the cast on, let it heal and be back to full health. I promise you that the fish will still be there and you will be able to catch them later. Simply the risk of further injuring yourself is not worth it. 1
Super User deaknh03 Posted May 12, 2011 Super User Posted May 12, 2011 I risked further damage when I was a youngster myself. Dislocated my shoulder, badly, but went back to playing ball as soon as I could move my arm. I can tell you, my shoulder has arthritis and creaks like a barn door when it rains out. I also took chances regarding other injuries, and I am fine. Moral of the story,if you take the chance, be prepared to pay the price, maybe not now, but later.
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 12, 2011 Super User Posted May 12, 2011 Going against my doc's advice, I hurt my back in my early twenties. I kept "playing on" like I was superman. Well in my mid twenties I got degenerative disks. Raw, cold and rainy days are the worst. Try having a kid you want to hold in your arms and can't do it for an extended period of time? Try playing ball with your kid but have to cut the session short because your back is shooting pains up to your brain? It's not fun and I wish I had a second chance, for my kids sake. Just remember, brains over brawn always win.
Super User skunked_again Posted May 13, 2011 Super User Posted May 13, 2011 in my line of work i have to try to cut my fingers off once every year or so. the last time was last wednesday. hand problems are a way of life, the sooner yo take care of them, the better.
Captin Obvious Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 lynyrdsky1 make the right choice and put your hand in a cast, I would be the same way if I was you but you got a lot of guys on here with real life experience so just listen to them and get the cast. Capt.O
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 13, 2011 Super User Posted May 13, 2011 Only advice I have would be for lynyrdsky1's parents.......b*tchslap this kid and knock some sense into his head.
GrundleLove Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Ditch the cast. Go big or go home. In fact, Dont tape it at all. Just tough it out, thats what a REAL fisherman would do.
lynyrdsky1 Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 I got it taped and the swelling is staying down but the way I got it taped I can't move half my hand. Do they make slip on braces or supporters like the ones for your ankle, knee, or writst that covers your hand?

Super User grimlin Posted May 13, 2011 Super User Posted May 13, 2011 What if it actually becomes worst where you can't even use it anymore? Come on dude, don't be stupid...You can always fish another day,go get it casted and let it heal properly. I broke my wrist and was in a cast for over 2 1/2- 3 months last year.Sure I lost some fishing time last year, but hey my wrist is all healed up and now I can fish again without worrying rather my wrist would heal right. Fishing is always going to be there. Get yourself healed up first or you will regret it.I couldn't imagine my wrist not working right for the rest of my life just because I I was too subborn, rather fish than let a major part of me heal up first so I can fish right.

As bad as this sounds, the fishing may still be there but the money and time I put in this month for the tournament will not be. I'm getting a cast it just has to wait till Monday. The cast is gonna cause me to be taken out of spring training for football which is gonna be another problem but right now, all practice is doing is making it worse. I understand what you guys are saying and it makes perfect sense but, I have to tough it out just another 3 days. 1

You can make more money, you can go fishing later, you can't grow a new hand.
Super User Lund Explorer Posted May 14, 2011 Super User Posted May 14, 2011 Just an idea, but at this point you might want to consider saving the following link..... http://www.adaptiveoutdoorsman.com/handicapfishing.html 1

tyrius. Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hey everyone, I know some of you remember me complaining about my hand about a month ago well.... Yeah, I remember this. Punch a wall Hurt your hand Post to a fishing website for possible diagnosis Complain that it hurts Receive good advice on what to do Ignore advice Complain that it hurts Repeat until it "feels better" And now you've asked for advice again Received good advice And ignored it again Somehow I'm not surprised. Here's another piece of advice. You're not a professional bass fisherman and you don't have a family relying on your income to pay rent/food/etc. Stop taking the tourneys so seriously and worry about what really matters, your long term health. 3

He's like a duck , water rolls off of their backs , in this case good advice rolls off this kids back.
Hyrule Bass Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 geez, yall act like its a major life threatening injury. athletes often play through injuries, delaying surgery till after the season, and come out just fine. cut the kid a break. and hey, if he wants to learn things the hard way then let him, thats the only way for some people to learn anything. 3 days extra of no cast probably didnt make or break this kids life like many of you are acting. some injuries might require emergency surgery, sometimes youre sent home and have to wait for surgery till the 'swelling goes down'... 1
