New Position In Port St. Lucie, Fl

Hey y'all,

I've accepted a one-year assignment in Port St. Lucie. I'll be moving down there in the next week or so and can't quite decide what to do. So I'm asking your advice!

1) Should I bring my boat? Part of me wants to have it for convenience, but since I don't know anyone in the area it might do me better to try to bum spots to learn the places.

2) Are there any good fishing guides in the area? I'm hoping to do all sorts of fishing...bass, inshore, deep sea. So if you know of any guides or would be willing to take me (I'll cover your gas and bring drinks) I'd appreciate it.

3) What are some off the beaten path type things you'd recommend I try to do?

Would a 17 ft tracker be up for those waters? I've heard they're pretty rough at times, but don't know what that's relative to.

You'll be fine in the Tracker. Theres a few members down here that use them. Okeechobee can get pretty rough if the wind starts blowing or some storms roll in. It's a big freakin body of water.

Spend some time reading maps and all to get an idea of where to run and not to run. The water levels are down right now. Not a good time to be unfamiliar out there. Ask around, theres plenty of people that will be more than happy to give you some help on which areas are safe and which aren't.

A 17 Tracker works just fine around here. I run around in a 17 foot flats boat.

Besides the places mentioned, you have tremendous saltwater fishing inshore in the St Lucie river and to the north in the Intracoastal waterway. Flatlined Charters (George Gotz) is a well regarded saltwater guide for PSL. Look at the reports on the Florida Sportsman forum for some of the old time guides. You can also stop into a tackle store called Snook Nook for advice. I think Squeaky Kelly still guides from there. There are many, many very good guides and knowledgeable forum members who can show around Lake O.

To go along with every response that were all spot on, if you travel across 714 in Stuart, go west your about 40 minutes from Okeechobee s North Shore, I have a place in Okeechobee and the GFs mother lives in PSL, its a nice ride that I take often.

Welcome to PSL bubba.

Ive lived and fished in psl for many years. The local lake/pond fishing is world class.. I have the current igfa FL line class record lmb 13.25 and documented over 123 bass over 8lbs with the FWC. ..The inshore snook fishing is great right now, as is the surf topwater in the morning. We've seen tons of tarpon and it seems like the fall mullet run has started early..there are acres of mullet in the river now. Anyway, if you want send me an email and I can turn you on to some fishy spots. Good luck in your new position.
