meridianboy Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I am wanting to get back into fishing some after being away from it for about 5 years now. My dad and I fished all the time while I was growing up and he passed away about 5 years ago now and I am lost when it comes to rod and reels and line. I grew up using a zebco 33 and Thats all I know how to use(just mash the button and let it cast I am wanting something nicer and better. I will be fishing for bass and channel catfish. I will be fishing out of a boat as well as on the bank. I will be fishing in a private lake. I will be using plastic worms and chicken liver. I have been looking at the Daiwa Exceler 100SH 100 SH 7.1:1 Baitcast Reel and the Bass Pro Shops Bionic Blade XPS Trigger Rod - BCB70MHT-2 but I am not sure if these are a good fit for what I want. Also I have never used a reel like this. Does it work like the zebco Im use to? I guess Im asking will I have a hard time learning how to cast with this without having backlash? please any info or help would be grat here. Last thing what will be the best line to use as well? I know I should have more than one rod and reel but as little as I fish I would just like to spend my money on one good one that will fit my needs for now and then down the line buy another. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 11, 2011 Super User Posted May 11, 2011 Suggestions to consider: LOCAL TACKLE SHOP If you have a knowledgeable local tackle store staff please discuss your concerns with them before making a purchase. BASS PRO SHOPS OR CABELA'S BPS may have someone in the fishing department who is a tournament fisherman and can give you guidance. True for Cabela's too. FIRST BAITCASTER Try the BPS rods and reels. Great for your introduction into bass fishing and they are reasonably priced. After you master the baitcaster and spinning rigs advance up to the more expensive rods and reels. Just some suggestions to consider. Quote

Flangler Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I like Berkley Trilene line. Its cheap and reliable if you are looking for mono. I woulds go with a medium heavy rod for for bass and catfish. For catfish I always fish a heavier rod being that you don't know how big they will be. Generally if you are in the right spot they can be huge!!! Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted May 11, 2011 Super User Posted May 11, 2011 Since you don't fish much , that outfit will do , especially for the cats. Quote
