stkbassn Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Okay guys, you may laugh but I saw the Berkley Line Spooling Station for $30..... I don't wanna spend $30 on something I've never had and never used and got by without until now..... However... Has anyone come up with a way or device that works just as well? Thanks Quote
tholmes Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 For baitcasters, a pole barn nail and the bench vise on my workbench do just fine. Stick the nail through the hole in the spool, clamp the nail in the vise, make sure the line is coming off of the top of the spool, add a little tension to the line by running it through your fingers (or a piece of cloth moistened with line conditioner, if you're so inclined) and crank away. For spinning reels, no tools are needed. Lay the spool of new line on the floor and make sure the line goes on the reel the same way it's wound on the spool. If you're not sure, wind a few turns onto the reel, and check to see if the line is twisted. If it is, turn the spool of line over and try again. Tom Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 11, 2011 Super User Posted May 11, 2011 Just get the line on the reel, then before you fish troll it out and reel back thru your fingers. Quote
tholmes Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Just get the line on the reel, then before you fish troll it out and reel back thru your fingers. Not so easy if you don't have a boat. But it does work. Tom Quote
dulouz Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Not so easy if you don't have a boat. But it does work. Tom I just tie my line to something like a fence post, walk the line out, cut the line from the post, then reel it in. As for general spooling, I generally leave the reel on the rod and run the line through the guides and onto the reel. Quote
NBR Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 The Berkley Line Spooler aren't useful for spinning rigs but grear for bait casters. I've had mine for closer to 20 years than 10 so $30 over that time frame is not much a year. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 11, 2011 Super User Posted May 11, 2011 I have a couple of them, one of them I've had for over ten years. I think it does a good job. Like any other line spooling plan, you have to pay attention or sometimes the line will clump on one side of the spool or the other. It isn't that big of a deal to get it right. You can rig it to spool line on spinning reels also, but you have to adjust the line tension with your fingers, again, not that big a deal. For a second, I thought you were getting hosed on the price, $30 seems a little stiff. I've got a Cabelas catalog right next to my desk and that's what they want for one in the 2011 Master Catalog. It seems to me that I frequently see them for less than that, I think I paid less than 20 for the last one I got, but I don't remember where or when I got it. Quote

I use mine for all of my reels - spinning, baitcast, and fly No problems at all...with the exception of the little rubber feet on the bottom. Stupid things kept falling out so I hit them with a bit of Super Glue. Quote

Do you spool your spinning reels the same way you spool your baitcasters, or do you move the spooling bar so the line comes off the face of the filler line? Quote
Stasher1 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I spool them just like my baitcasters, but I soak everything with KVD line conditioner while spooling. No problems so far, but I've only been doing it this way for the past few years. Quote
royal0014 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I've got one, didn't pay that much for it, off season sale. Use it for both spin and b/c reels. Absolutly love it. After filling a spinning reel, tie on a ball swivel, attach to a tree, pole, ect, and walk the line off. You can then use the rod tip to put some tension on the line as you reel back up.Simple. Quote
Hiram Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Between my brothers and I we have about 60 reel, so there is alot of line changing. I can change mine just as well in my garage, but it's more fun to go to my brothers and use his because the beer is cold and the stories get bigger everytime. So buy one and invite all your friends because getting together and talking about the big ones is almost as much fun as the fishing. Just fish and have fun Quote
APK62 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 This is what I am talking about: The instructions attached to the bottom of the unit are lacking and do not mention or illustrate that you can (and should) rotate the spool holder bracket 90 degrees so that your spool is facing sideways to your reel. They do not mention to flip the spool of line on the bracket if the line is coming off twisted instead of loading smoothly. I think that all fishing lines should come with instructions as to which way the line should come off the spool. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 13, 2011 Super User Posted May 13, 2011 It has NOTHING to do with the line, and everything to do with the reel. Look on the reel instructions for how to spool. Here's a Snippet from a Shimano reel: Quote

I've had my Berkley spooler for 20 some years as well. the spooler is nice becaus it keeps everything you need right in the same device.line cutter, old line remover, spool holder. I couldn't be happier with the usefulness of this product over all these years. Quote
