zenyoungkoh Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 according to http://www.bassresource.com/fish/reels.html , putting the spool of a spinning reel in a cup of water a day before going fishing helps reduce line twist and line memory. "To help prevent line memory and tangles, drop your spool in a glass of water the night before you go fishing and let it soak overnight." I've decided to do that, but its washing some oil from the inside of the spool, out. Is that a bad thing? Should i continue doing this or take the spool out asap? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 Just use KVD line conditioner. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 Don't know,But I definitely ain't leaving my spool overnight in a bowl of water.Sure it works, but like you said you are removing oil and grease. I wouldn't put the spool back on the reel wet either. KVD line conditioner sounds like a better idea. I spray the main refill spool with KVD before spooling it onto my spinning reel with a few squirts while reeling it on as well. I've never had a problem with memory to be honest. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 Twist and memory are 2 different issues. KVD does work, but if you don't have it use water, the results will be the same. I would place the spool in the sink with warm water, let it soak 15-20 and you are done with no harm to the spool. Now the twist, before fishing troll your line out all the way to the knot and let it float in the water for a few minutes, then reel in slowly and grasping the line, you should have no twist and your line will be supple. I would use a ball bearing swivel to prevent line twist. I'm not a mono user but I spooled up with mono today to use with my barracuda tubes. These lures rotate 360 degrees constant and will put lots of twist on your line. After about 2 hours of solid casting this morning I had zero line twist and my line is perfectly supple, using nothing special trilene xl 17lb. Mono will only be used on this outfit it's still like fishing with a long rubber band, who can use this stuff...lol. For general fishing it's braid. The cuda tubes were creating too much line twist on my braid which does not troll out. Quote
SausageFingers Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Just use KVD line conditioner. This only works if you're wearing KVD sandals while applying the line conditioner. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 What DOES work is putting the filler spool in warm water before filling the reel. KVD L&L is always a good idea. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 What DOES work is putting the filler spool in warm water before filling the reel. Now that I have done in the past.Should have mentioned that in my previous post. Long before I knew about KVD. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 9, 2011 Super User Posted May 9, 2011 Yep, it was about the only way to keep heavy flouro form uncoiling on a little baitcaster spool. Quote
zenyoungkoh Posted May 10, 2011 Author Posted May 10, 2011 Thanks for the tips! btw putting the spool in water worked really well! i went fishing today and not a single tangle/nest!! Last time i went with my new line i got about 5-10 frustrating bird nest Quote
BobP Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 It seems worth mentioning. If your spool has bearings in it that you can't remove, dunking it isn't such a good idea. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 10, 2011 Super User Posted May 10, 2011 Glad it worked for you. It's best top soak your filler spool before putting it on the reel. I have really never had a use for an over the counter product when there are simple fixes around that require no extra expense in money and time. In fairness I have tried them but the gains were modest at best and not worth the effort. Quote
