slowpoke274 Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 females are starting to come up towards the beds in this pond i fish its public and gets a lot of pressure the water is pretty clear you can see about 3 ft down its got hydrilla ringing the edge out to about 6ft ive spotted to very impressive females so far they arent spooking when you pitch in to the bed but they wont pick anything up they will track and follow a black lizard and a koppers topwater frog but wont touch either thrown multiple baits in different colors still nothing any ideas would be appreciated Quote
ripinthem Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Keep changing baits. Try crayfish or bluegill imitations that mimic their natural bed robbers in that area. Don't be afraid to downsize, cause the natural invaders there may be small, and I always get better hook-ups with smaller baits(more hook, less plastic). I've seen them go into moods where they won't touch anything, and then just turn on and bite everything I throw at em. Quote
hmongkidBee Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 My suggestion would be to stay as far away as you can without losing sight of the fish. Then pitch in a bright colored lure like a white jig, or pink senko. When bed fishing, your job is to annoy the bass enough to make it bite your lure when it's ticked off. One thing to keep in mind is to always have your hook exposed so that it makes hooking the bass that much easier. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted May 8, 2011 Super User Posted May 8, 2011 In addition to what has been posted, I like tubes as well. Quote
joshholmes Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 brown tubes work great. you can crawl them on the bottom and they look exactly like bullgeads, which in my lake are the main nest robbers Quote
slowpoke274 Posted May 8, 2011 Author Posted May 8, 2011 ive thrown lizards worms river bugs and craws in junebug, black, white, watermelon red, green pumpkin, pumpkin even tried a spro bbz1 in killer gill ran a buzzbait over her head this morning the good thing is its on my way to work so that gives me two chances each day til they spawn to get em the full moon is in nine days away here so ive got some time [i hope] ill try the brown tube in the morning ive never had this much trouble with a bed fish before but itll make it that much sweeter when i do catch her Quote
Jim H. Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 This is my first post here... Anytime you are fishing spawning bass in clear water you can forget about finessing a bite. If you really want to catch her, think about what she is doing. She is trying to protect her nest and trying to reproduce her species... in other words she is trying to become a mother. So what you have to do is to peeve her off! One thing that seems to work better than anything else is to run a big noisy crank bait through the nest. Do that enough times and she will attack the intruder. Just remember that bass (or any other fish) do not have any hands. That means whether they are hungry, P.O.'d, or just curious, they will take the object into their mouth just to try to figger out what the heck it is. I remember one time when I was a kid. I stepped on my favorite dog's tail while he was asleep in front of the fireplace. He bit me!!! And that is exactly what you want the bass to do. Oh, by the way there is no such thing as an "uncatchable" large mouth black bass. Quote
slowpoke274 Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 running a crank through the bed wouldnt be a bad idea but the bed is a flat rock completely surrounded by hydrilla i pitched a bbz1 into the bed but other than that lures with treble hooks would be pretty hard to use Quote
dhami013 Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Yum F2 Wooly Bug. Orange on the bottom, gray on top. Works for me every time. I just rub it in their faces, and try to find the one spot on or near them to upset them enough to bite. May take 10 seconds may take 20 mins. Just depends on how bad you want the fish. Quote
Vinny Chase Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 When I have exhausted all my efforts with some of the baits already listed, I dropshot a 4" lizard or baby brush hog, it has been very successful for me Quote

Every time? dhami013 might have found us the long searched magic bait!! All seriousness there is no one bait that will catch a fish every time. No matter how short/long you work a fish, there are days when they just wont bite anything and others where you could catch them on a beer cap. Quote
Nibbles Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 A scrounger head work well for me as a crank substitute in places where I'm leery of throwing a treble hook bait. Give it a try. The nice thing about them is you can work them fast or slow and they don't float up like cranks, so you can experiment by crawling them past the fish, crawling it near the fish and then speeding up a lot, or just burn it the whole way. I like to use 4" and 5" SK Caffeine Shads as trailers, but just about anything will work. Try threading one of your brown tubes on one, it may just work. They typically look like this: Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 flip a live nightcrawler in there, she wont resist it... Quote
B@ssCrzy Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Last night I had the same situation. Bass sitting on a bed and I threw everything at it. No bite. Even with a wacky rigged senko with normal retrieve of hopping it up and letting it fall still nothing. Finally I varied my retrieve to just pumping my rod tip/line slightly so the ends would vibrate but the worm just stayed stationary for the most part. Did that for about 15-20 seconds before anything happened but sure enough the senko was too much for it. A lot of fun seeing a bass slowly creep toward your line and then gobble it up. Good luck!
