basser22 Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 me and my buddie have been out fishing everyweekend and nothing has been going on. we cant seem to get the bite going this season. Any tips on what i should try to catch them? Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted May 8, 2011 Super User Posted May 8, 2011 That's a difficult question since you don't state what you have been trying, and where you've been fishing. By where, I don't mean the name of the pond/lake/river. I mean where on that particular body of water. Are you fishing close to the shore, in deeper water, rocky bottom, etc. If you want help, you've got to fill in the blanks. Quote

laus Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Hey basser22....I'm from Maine too and am having the same problem! Been out just about every day and only caught one 1 1/2 lb smallie in about 15' water 30' from shore. Rocky bottom, goopy bottom, stumps, shallow mostly though. Found empty smallie beds.Cranks, jignpig, T-rig CR,drop shot....worms, lizards etc! The only thing I can come up with is that the water is still pretty cold so their metabolism is slow...and if they've spawned (??) they're pooped and maybe moved deeper?! Guess you can tell I'm frustrated. I even tried worms. Nada. Quote
jorilo Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 I live in Central Maine. I've had no issues catching fish. It's all about location. Try shallow flats, 2 to 4 feet deep w/ Manns -1, Rattle Trap or spinnerbait. Throw a jig into any wood you can find. Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 They are not that slow; been catching them since early April. Just read this write up: Been catching them in 8 feet or less: Well the smallmouth were biting today! Got to the lake around 0905 and at the landing it was a balmy 38 degrees not counting the 10-15 mph winds . Didn't think we would do that well especially when there is still chunks of ice floating around the lake . We didn't catch anything for the first hour an a half until my friend caught a nice 3lbs 05oz. smallmouth on a Texas rigged rage craw. He kept throwing that with no more bites. I started out with a 6-9ft crankbait with no luck at all. Then I switched over to a Rapala gold suspending husky jerk-bait. About a dozen cast into the bait I was about to switch to something else when all of a sudden I notice a very nice looking bronze back following behind it. It never committed. I had a few more of these so I decided that they want that bait just not the presentation that I was using,(a little too fast). So I said to my friend "I think I'm going to try a longer pause between pulls" and on the next cast I hooked into a nice smallmouth at 3lbs 09oz. That was all she wrote, we started catching after that. We caught somewhere in the high teens as fare as numbers. Not one of them were under 3lbs in fact I do believe the smallest one was 3lbs 03oz. The largest ones were at 3lbs 13ozs. We didn't break four pounds today but our five fish smallmouth bag was a little over 18lbs. The bonus was that we also caught four brown trout on the same lures that all measured 15 1/2", Guess what I'm having for dinner? It was a great day! Here is the proof: Tight lines to all! 2011 is looking good! No duplicates all seperate catches. Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I know you all have probably seen these already but it is just to show both largemouth and small mouths are biting good: so I recommend that you all get out there and nail them while you can! He is a trooper we woke up to rain again this morning but there was no wind. I called him up and asked if he still wanted to go and he was like your dang right I do! Got love the spirit so I suited up and met up with him at the gas station. This guy hardly gets to go fishing and his tackle is made up of whatever essential bait that I told him he would need. Lets make a long story short; we fished in the river and he hooks into his largest bass ever, and it put up a nice fight. In fact it was kicking his butt but he overcame the obstacle and landed a nice 5lbs 05oz largemouth. This is his new PB! his Previous PB was 1lbs 08oz, a big bump up. He said that it was because of his excellent guide and I told him nope it was all you. He has only caught maybe 20 some odd bass in his life. He couldn't believe how much bigger a 5lbs bass looks and then he said I wonder what a 8 pound bass looks like, I said don't push your luck! Well here is the proud fisherman! He caught it on a Black and Blue 3/8 oz jig with an Okeechobee colored Rage Craw trailer. A few more from the day; Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Just got back from an uncomfortable day of fishing. Got on the lake around 0930 today, I almost didn't go because it was suppose to be very windy. It was suppose to be in the high 40's so I decided to go fishing instead of sitting around on my butt. Well the weather man was wrong again! It ended up only topping out at 41 degrees and thats not counting the 15-25mph winds. I tried fishing a couple of spots in the lake and ended up not getting any bites. So I decided to go and fish the stream out to the main river. The water was very high from all of the previous rain storms. There was a bunch of trees blown down into the water, which should make for some nice cover later on. The water temperature was right at 46 degrees. Came up to a beaver hut and started fishing in the stream. I grabbed my rod that had my 3/8 oz black and blue jig with a black and red fleck craw trailer. First cast tight in next to the beaver hut. I let the ripples settle and then I reeled in the slack. Bang bang, my first bite for the day, "awesome", my mind thought! I set the hook and reeled in my first very feisty largemouth for the day. He weighed two and a half pounds. Very healthy looking and boy he gave a good fight, even in cold water. This proved to be the pattern for the rest of the day. It was miserable out there though. It rained, then it haled, and then it snowed and the wind was awful. However! I had a great day of fishing! I caught 26 bass for the day. One dink but the rest were good solid 2 1/2 pound bass. I caught one 3 1/2 pound largemouth and lost one at the boat that looked to be in the four pound range. The highlight for the day was the beautiful 5 lbs 03 oz largemouth that I caught. It was the third bass for the day at that time. She was laying in about a foot of water right tight inside the alders. She put up a great fight and took lots of drag! And she put a big smile on my face. Going out again tomorrow. Going for smallmouths again. The trip to the stream: It was calm for the first hour, thats why the lake is so flat, that changed! Tempting shoreline: Should be good cover a little later on in the season: Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Lets start here! First fish of the day and the lure: Second fish of the day: Lets cast into these alders! Thunk thunk whats that? Oh ya a nice 5lbs 03 largey! Followed by a colorful dink: A 3 1/2 pounder A almost 3 pounder: Got too wet and cold no more bass pictures but it was 26 total for the day Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 The hale bouncing off the deck: The snow: Time to go home! Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Fishing a jig and craw again today, the lake was like glass today, which is a nice change from all the wind! Caught a nice 4lbs 08oz largemouth on the black jig. Put up a nice fight. Caught a few three pounders too. They were very active today, you would toss your jig out and see a V-line come from 10 yards away and smash your lure. It was great fun and we caught 32 bass all together. Here is the 4lbs 8oz. largie: A few more from today: A few smallmouths from a few days ago: Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Well its been a great season so far! Took my Great Uncle out today for his first trip of the season and he catches a nice one. Just shy of 5 lbs. This might be his last trip for a few months too because he has to start treatment for his cancer. This fish put a smile on his face though! Both fish were caught on jigs rig with a Rage Craw. That rod with the spinner bait was just put there, thats not what it was caught on. And mine from Saturday. Quote
MaineBassMan Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 We caught all of these bass power fishing; if we didn't get a bite we would move on to different cover, shoreline and different baits. They are willing to bite if you use the right presentation, lures and cover. Fishing over 10 feet of water right now seems a little too deep! I wouldn't fish that deep until around the end of June or the beginning of July! Not trying to sound like a know it all but shallow 10 feet or less cover is the bet right know. Spinner baits, straight rigged senkos, tubes, jigs, suspending jerk baits, cranks and jigs are great right now! Check out my club's website; http://www.themainebladerunners.net/ We have had some nice bass weighed in so far. Quote

Our lakes are so frozen over right now that you can drive your pickup truck on them. You won't see any fishing stories from me until the end of March or sometime in April all depends on when the ice goes out? I'M READY TO START THOUGH!!!!!!!!! Quote
MrBadGuy Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Okay i understand, our lakes and even our rivers are also frozen. We have -12 degrees.Do you go ice fishing? LgOli Quote
