wvuwhat Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 Leaving early tomorrow morning to head up there. This will be my first time fishing there. From what I understand, this is a tough lake. Will update tomorrow evening or Sunday. Hopefully, someone on the boat will catch one of those 9 pounders. If you've got some spots PM me. Quote

I can tell you, it's a tough lake. Very highly pressured. Last weekend I had 6 boats within a cast of me and was cut off fishing twice. They installed an overflow parking lot last year or the year before, which just makes me sad. It was hard enough before! Good luck! Quote
TheLastRodBender Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I havent been there in a while, but i can remember when there were NO houses or ANYTHING around it. Kinda tears me up a little bit cuz i used to LOVE goin out there. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Took the trip out there last weekend..... read about it being a "hidden" gem and sounded much more like the waters I am far more used to fishing in my younger days. Was rather surprised to find out for myself and read what I did here compared to what I was told and had read about this lake. I did not expect the fishing to be so tough and for the place to be so crowded. It was very impressive to see some gigantic assorted panfish in there.... I mean literally huge. They did not want to bite anything, but they were massive. I am starting to realize I need to stop bouncing all around Northern VA and start focusing on just one body of water.... I literally am hitting a different body of water every week, which is probably a big mistake. Quote

The only VA citation i have came out of that lake... 12 in sunfish... little hawg weighed just over an LB. it was HUGE! Quote

jeepcrazy Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 How did you all do? Did you happen to notice the water temp? Badly. Got three, largest of which was a little under 2lbs. Just couldn't put together a pattern. They all came on different baits in different areas. Had one really good hookup on a lipless crank that I failed to set the hook deeply enough on. Water temp was 66.4 on Saturday. You guys are right about one thing, though. The panfish are huge. lol. Quote

Thanks for the report! That place is tough. Sounds like going after those large panfish might be a good alternative for me next time there. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Good luck with them...... my old lady was in the boat with me going for them..... we literally had nothing but tiny little ones sucking blood worms off for free lunch..... The big ones just stood and stared as it sat inched from their mouth. As we headed in we saw a very young boy catch one literally inches from the shore..... I am talking 6 inches max. They brought it up to the minnow shop..... it was a citation. Absolutely huge. I will chalk it up to one of those days, and makes for a funny story. I wonder if the water clarity is makes it that you need very natural baits and colors or if the pressure causes more exotic lures to be favored. The age old question right? I was surprised the branch of the lake up to the right from the launch.... up at the end two weekend ago now.... it was far cloudier than the crystal clear water more down towards the main body. I will definitely head out again at some point, look very promising. Quote
jeepcrazy Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 66.8 Yesterday. Interesting, I noticed the big girls are just NOW getting up on the beds. That might explain part of the absolutely dead fishing there the last couple weeks. It's always been hard, but not this bad. The other thing is Frederick is very, very pressured right now. The river has been up and most folks who would go there have been hitting Frederick to relieve the fishing blues. I can tell you from experience there over the last few years, more natural colors and a good, clear fluorocarbon definitely make a difference. Good luck! Quote

William E. Butler Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 This is an old post, but I'm just wondering something.... I know lake Burke is a hard, pressured place to fish. is Frederick as pressured or worse? 1 Quote
