1234567 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Has anyone here experienced fishing the rim canal this time of year near Clewiston or MooreHaven? A couple questions I was wondering about is how deep is this canal? What works best, techniques anyways? Are there double digit bass in the canals this time of year. What kind of structure is found in this canal. I really appreciate any help, thanks everyone!!! Quote
bocabasser Posted May 7, 2011 Posted May 7, 2011 just north of uncle joes cut on the east side of the rim ditch, there is a stretch of rocks. giggy heads and big worms always have worked for me. Quote

Due to the drought, it is extremely shallow in areas. we pitched toward the lake side of the canal using worms t-rigged. Caught about 15-20 in 60-90 minutes. June-bug color was the ticket that day. the bottom is awfully rocky-so be prepared to get snagged a couple of times. The fish seemed to be where the gators were or vice versa. Quote

Is the canal castable from shore to the other side or should we fish from a boat? Is most of the canal a rocky bottom? 15-20 in 60-90 minutes isn't bad. What was the big fish for the day? I am thinking of throwing cranks, jigs, plastic worms and some BIG swimbaits just in case a giant may be in there looking for a bigger meal. Quote

We fished there after the main lake where we had a couple of 4-6 lbers. yes-most of the canal is a rocky bottom. we fished from a boat, I wouldn't recommend fishing across from the other side as the canal gets a lot of boat traffic. good luck!! Thanks for the help, maybe we'll have to go to the main lake. I don't know anything about the lake but I've been told the rim maybe a good spot this time of year because of the water levels. I've never flipped mats before, maybe a good time to try! Quote

The water levels in the lake are very low, use caution. Quote

salmicropterus Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 If you as you said in your words "don't know anything about the Lake", now is not the time to learn. Going slow is not a solution either. I would suggest staying in the Rim Ditch, the cuts into the Dynamite holes, the Dynamite holes themselves and if you are hell-bent on venturing out on the Lake, the Clewiston ship channel which is well marked by navigation. First of all, each of these places are holding fish right now. Fish the edges of the drop-offs on the ship channel. There are humps in front of many of the cuts into the Dynamite holes-fish those. Many of the D. Holes have severe edges and drtop-offs-fish those. Look for irregularities on the Rim Ditch such as outcroppings or vegetation. Quote
gar-tracker Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 With the water as low as it is there's tons of giant fish in that Rim Ditch. Cut 92, Dynamite holes, The football field, Pahokee Rocks, the ledge north of Uncle Joes, The Clewiston Channel, Normans Channel. One could stop pretty much anywhere in there and catch a big sack right now. And like mentioned above if you dont know the lake you better stay in, I ran the lake from Okee Tanti to the south end this weekend, checking out my usual low water spots, one could really mess up if they arent familiar with this lake. I love it. Quote

What's best for the big girls here, big swimbaits???? Quote
