Im 18 years old, and it seems like im the only fisherman in colimbus OH. I grew up fishing with my dad and my older brother. My brother went to college and my dad is stuborn when it comes to new techniques/tackle he maintains a vintage abu, ambassadeur 5500 c with 14-20lb. always lo-vis green trilene mono with a big bullet weight 5/0 hook with 10 in worm and a spinning combo from the 70's or 80's with a f11 original rapala. Then i was turned on to a lake i have been carp and catfishing on weekend nights in the summer with my brothers. Being, at one point, no more than fifty yards from i-270 and at another,100 from i-70,surrounded by a business, trucking warehouse residential housing.Along with a preconcieved notion the water was uncapable of sustaining healthy populations of game fish.,we caught more carp then anythinggrowing up so thought it was polluted and no gamefish we would regularly seek could survive. Even after i was told it had bass i was skeptical so we, as suggested went and used light spinning tackle using a carolina rig. We went 3 or 4 times and caught only a couple fish that came close to a foot. theres not much visible cover, a brush pile and 20 yards of nice rip-rap bank is about all that stands out, so we inferred it didnt have enough cover that big bass can utilize. Then i decided to go on a excursion i expected would last at most an hour due to dark skys and bad forecasts for the night. When i arrived i took a look at the lake from my elevated position and saw the expected high waters being whipped by 15 mph wind towards the rip rap shore and brush pile, so i started down the gravel shore,at times wading ankle deep, throwing a 7/16 oz swimshad with the wind. At first i favored slow retrieves thinking the fish would be inactive until i was burning it in to recast in maybe 2 feet of water a 14'' fish eats the swimbait. i began trying faster and more eratic presentations and found weed beds from 4-8 feet im guessing staying about 15 yards off shore. In 2 and a half hours i caught around twenty fish pretty good, what makes it the best two hours of fishing iv experienced is the 8 fish over 2 lb. 8 oz, including my personal best a 5 lb. 15 oz. monster that unlike most of the strikes that day wasnt shy about letting me no i got a hit. 5 biggest went 5. 3 lb 4oz. 4. 3 lb. 6 oz. 3. 3 lb. 13 oz. 2. 4 lb 7 oz. 1 5 lb 15 oz. It inspired me to see what other unknown fisheries i have access to. I never even got to the rip rap.
